Default Will a bigger exhaust help any?

I think it becoming time to replace my 7 year old stock exhaust. Would it help my car in any way to get an exhaust pipe that's bigger in diameter or will the help in performance be neglidgable?

Anyway - when will it aid power wise? Low or high rpms (high I imagine). And will it hinder the car in any way? I heard cat back exhausts slightly hurt low end performance.
