The cover is ther to protect the belt an gears from debri. No dammage will be none if nothing gets in there.
If the belt breaks or is not installed correctly then you risk having you pistonns slap up against the wall and destroying your motor.

There is a replacement for displacement. It is on 2 wheels and 600cc.
