Re: Looking to buy an accent.
300lbs? The Beta engine and Tib tranny weighs maybe an extra 100lbs over the stock Alpha.
As for potential. I was looking into turboing the Alpha (and did some research) and decided to go with a Beta swap instead. The turbo S-Coupe pistons are 7.5:1, which is VERY low. I also believe they are still cast which will put another damper on things. I believe the rods are the same also.
Keep this in mind...cheap, reliable, fast...pick 2 of those. You want a fast car that is reliable? Shell out some bucks for tuning, etc. There's not such thing as a perfectly reliable cheap turbo.
BTW, the SOHC 1.5L respondes rather well to NA mods.
You want 180whp that's reliable? Swap in a Beta, you're at 120whp right away. Run a low boost turbo kit (~7psi) on the stock internals and you're easily at 180whp.
180whp on the 1.5L is VERY unlikely and will take A LOT of tuning and work. Keep in mind the 1.5L only makes around 70whp stock, so you're talking about almost 3x as much power. That means you'll need over 15lbs of boost, which I'd be very hesitant to put on the stock S-Coupe parts.
