Ok, i did some testing today and finally got to compare the intake temps given by the wai and the cai on our cars. Intake air temps were measured by an OBD2 scanner. I tested the wai w/ and w/o my ghetto heatshield and a CAI that was scavenged from a KORE version I CAI for the 2000-01 tiburon. The intake temps were as follows:
Ambient ~90 degrees F
WAI
idle- 145-150
crusing- 118-125
WAI w/ heatshield
idle- 140
crusing- 120-128
CAI (ambient ~80)
idle-120
cruising-100
My driving impressions are the cai feels better in the midrange, and sounds much deeper but the wai feels better up top. Both are almost annoyingly loud at WOT above 4000rpms, to the point of almost being deafening. I'm gonna switch back to my wai, the intake temp drop doesnt justify the added flow loss from the bends in the CAI nor the added throttle lag due to the increased throttle volume (VERY small, but its there). Maybe one day I'll be able to do a true dyno test, but till then this is what i'm going on.
Cliff notes: sometimes cooler isnt better, go w/ a WAI.
Oh yeah, I almost got arrested while out "testing" the car/ At this one intersection I lit up the front tires while flooring it, so everyone around, including the two cops who gave chase, knew I was there. Thank god for side streets.
