With just about any injury. You are to ice it within the first 24-36 hours. 20 minutes applying ice and 1 hour off. Since it's your hand and if it happens to go numb while using ice stop for one hour and apply ice again until numb or 20 minute.
If you put heat on a recent injury it will encourage more swelling. You don't want more swelling and it will prolong healing time.
There is the possibility you might have fractured a bone in your wrist the most common one fractured is your scaphoid.
