oh man.. i just want to let you know that i have 17" VOXX RIMS on my accent right now.. i bought it from a friend and it looks great.. the thing looks lowered. .lol.. it runs great too.. i love the sound of the low profile tires! but the only problem is that i cant have too much weight on it.. especially when i hit bumps.. i hear the back tires hitting the fender for half a second.. scares me.. lol..
a friend told me to get coil overs for it with adjustable srpings.. hope i can get that fix..
heres some pics before i got it installed.. ill post pics of it on the rims later on.. im st work right now..

Ok, you can do that with any size wheel you pick just by getting taller tires, but with 17" wheels you'll be forced to run a tire that's about 1/2" larger in diameter than stock.
16" wheels are a good option because you can get tires from just under stock diameter on up to whatever larger size you may want.
As far as wheel styles go that's just personal preference. I just got new wheels and I like them:
