This sounds like a problem I had with another car, a recently wrecked and unlamented Kia Sportage, only not as pronounced. After checking out the issue on a Sportage message board, I dedicated a Saturday to removing the throttle body, cleaning it with solvent and brushes, and using a Dremel to polish it. The improvement was noticeable.
