I had posted in the "newbie" section about purchasing a 2002 accent gs 5-speed I've pretty much decided on purchasing it but im still concerned about long term reliabilty. I know its got a killer warranty but what good is a car if u can't drive it.. So if someone could at least give me some ownership feedback that would be great thanks I've always purchased hondas and toyotas but i need something better on gas to get me to and from work hope you guys can help.aranoid:
I purchased my car in April of 2000 purely for reliability. I was driving back and forth between Danbury, CT and Rochester, NY on weekends for a year and half, after that I made several trip from CT to Columbus, OH.
I now have a 25 mile commute to work with 94000 miles on the car.
The things that needed to be fixed and were covered under warranty were:
Missing screw plugs in the interior
Warped rotors (7K miles - I don't think the wheels were properly torqued down from the factory)
Alternator (30K miles - drove through a lot of rain and salt, probably accelerated corrosion)
Catalytic Converter (50K - 2000's failed CT emissions)
Shift Linkage (60K - probably due to high miles and my style of driving (hard shifts). Used Hyundai Roadside Assistance to get car to dealer - no complaints).
Not covered under warranty:
Ignition coil (65K - high miles through rain, snow and salt, probably accelerated corrosion - Used Hyundai Roadside assistance again, because I was only running on 2 cylinders, no complaints)
Timing Belt (70K - Normal maintenance, set aside $400 for this one)
Tires/plugs/oil changes/etc (Normal Maintenance)
It may look like a lot for just a year 2000 model, but I've put unusually high miles on this car. Depending on the quality of gas, I can still occasionally hit 40 miles/gallon. I would recommend using synthetic oil after the break in period, it'll help the longevity of the engine. I really have no complaints about the car in terms of reliability... it's exceeded my expectations.
I have a 96 Accent, and it now has 117K on it
the car has never had any trouble except for the following:
AC Evaporator developed a leak at 103K, replaced by me, cost 211 dollars
Timing Belt (Supposed to do at 60K, done at 101K..cost 340)
Water Pump (Supposed to do at 60K, done same time as timing belt)
Bought a new AC Compressor at 109K, compressor froze while driving, sent it back for refund and put the old on back on...old one STILL going (If it ain't broke don't fix it)
This car has been amazing...especially for the 1K dollars I spent on buying it

IMO you'll definatly get your $ worth. They last. Personally, if i were buying an accent I'd get the 2003 accent (should be released any time now) they're sweeeeet

True, but once the 2003's arrive he'll probably be able to get a great deal on an 2002.
I have a 91 Excel with 140,000 miles and it works great as long as you change the oil and do the routine maintenance.
