1998 excel fuel consumption and fuel gauge

So I have a 1.5l Dohc excel and have been noticing my l/100km is getting worse and worse. Went from 650km per tank to 400kms. I have had it looked at by the mechanic and nothing could be found. I have had no chang in the fuel I use or the way I drive and I'm always doing highway driving in it. When I fill up it's about 35 to 40l that goes in. Also my fuel gauge reading drops dramatically then goes back to original position when I go down a hill is there an easy fix for this. CHEERS

Get a second, third opinion from different local mechanics to see if they find something.
