Default Oxygen sensor question

Alright i've looked everywhere, done searches, and checked the hma webtech, and the Chiltons book, but i still cannot find how many wires go to the second o2 sensor on the exhaust of a 97 Accent GT. Its hella cold out so i'll be damned if imma go rollin around on the drivway tryin to look myself. I want to buy a universal one but i need to know how many wires there are going to it. Everywhere i look tells me something differnet. Thanks guys :sleepy:

Default Re: Oxygen sensor question

Hi there,

From memory all Australia spec Hyundais with Hyundai designed motors (1993 for the S-Coupe, 1994 for the X3 Excel, 1995 for the J2 Lantra and 1996 for the RD Coupe) have had an O2 sensor with 3 wires to it. I am not sure what the models before these, which ran a Mitsubishi motor, had in them.

The 3 wire sensors have a small heating coil in them to get the sensor up to operating temperture sooner, helping keep emissions low as soon as possible once the engine has been started. Single wire O2 sensors rely on the heat of the exhaust gases to bring the O2 sensor to operating temperature, and therefore these cars generally produce higher emissions soon after being started then cars with a 3 wire O2 sensor.

If in doubt, maybe just give your local Hyundai dealer a call to ask them, or Hyundai America (I am pretty sure they have a toll free number to head office) or even a try local spare parts store - I would hope they'd have details listed in their catalogues.

But my money is on itbeign a 3 wire sensor.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
