Default smoky engine

I have a 95 Excel X3 with an indicated 95000Km.....It has got very hot several times (blocked radiator) and if I can believe the mileage, has sat around unused for ages. Inside the valve cover is a lot of black sooty stuff. I have added a bottle of stop leak (for valve seals) and a bottle of stop smoke, but it still smokes. Compression test is as new. What do you think? Overheating glazed bores/ stuffed oil rings???? Any ideas? Thanks!

I would first suspect a blown head gasket. I also would check the head for leaks while it is out of the car.

Doing this on a bench will tell you if it is the valve seats or something else.

I'd have to agree with MechaniX on this one.

Thanks guys! Now here'a a curly one: How can I tell for sure that it is valve seals? I got a quote from the local H dealer, and it costs $50 for the seals, and $150 to fit......I can get a complete engine for $600, so I would like to know how to tell which way to go. Ta :??:

Hint here is the sooty stuff; I'm guessing the busted seal/seals are on the exhaust side. These valves bake hotter than Betty Crocker in operation. Since compression is as new, shouldnt be the gasket either. BTW I forgot to ask, is the smoke white-ish or black and stinky?:hmmm:
