When should I replace the timing belt and what will it cost?
I was wondering when I should have the timing belt replaced in my 2000 Accent GL. I was also wondering if I should have this done at the dealership or if I should find a shop that does it for less. Also, I checked the Webtech site for information on how to remove it but it looks too complicated for me. Has anyone done it on their own and what tools would I need? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think Hyundai recomends it to be done after 50k miles

According to my book, 60 K is the time.
However, it is a PITA to do. I've done them, but they are time consuming. Getting to the belt is fairly straight forward, but getting the cam and crank marks to line up is not that easy because the space is fairly cramped. It is easier with the right front tire off to see the marks.

lets just say this
i hate doing them, its a PITA big time for me, i will never like doing them and i don't see myself doing this if i dont' have a lift lol
My dealership charges $279 to change the timing belt but thats toyota, Hyundai actually has a higher labor rate on Long Island so go ask them but yea, you have to line up the cam and crank and stuff and without light in the right spots or a mirrior, its not worht it

Every 60,000 miles is when you should change it. I remember I was in the dealer getting mine done and some guy was in there and he let his go until 70,000 something and his top end was literally destroyed.
If the belt breaks, say bye bye to your valves......and your money....

Re: When should I replace the timing belt and what will it cost?
my questions are this~1. does anything need to come off to remove the cover?(i only took a quick peek at it)
2~ if the gears are marked to the position prior to removal of old belt, then is it just a matter of lining back up the marks, using sense of where it turned(if at all)
3~ if A to #2 is yes, then will i not need a timing light?
4~ what damage if any would be caused if i chose to leave off the cover when all is finished???
thats all. thanks!

My dealer charges $349 to R&R the timing belt, which is slightly higher tham my own shop rate (at $325 for most cars).
I sometimes remove the motor and do it on the bench with some cars.

If the belt breaks or is not installed correctly then you risk having you pistonns slap up against the wall and destroying your motor.
