I'm kinda wondering the same thing since my 02 Accent has 53,000 miles on it(not kms!!) and I have raced my car at road course events a couple of times before. That's gotta wear on it at least a little.

I had a '97 1.5L and it snapped at 100,500 mi (~161,000 km) or so. It was my Mom's car before she gave it to me with 80k so I assumed it had been changed. They were all highway miles, she makes a 120mi round trip daily. So, a babied belt will last you right about 100k. I just had mine changed on my '00 a few weeks ago w/ 61k mi on the odo... I don't want to replace another engine :dead:
The book recommends changing the timing belt every 60,000 miles. Although it is likely it will last longer, it is a good idea to get in the habit of doing the change on a regular basis.
If you are racing it, I suggest changing it more often.
I don't know how long mine lasted.. I had it changed at around 75K. Our engines are interference-type engines, and if the blet breaks while running, you will be blessed if you don't have to replace anything. At least you will usualyl have some bent valves.. At worst, it might not even be worth fixing.

Yeah. I don't know what needs to happen for just a few valves to be bent, but it's gotta be something slow. I was going maybe 10 mph in 2nd gear and fucked my engine up so bad it was cheaper to replace the whole thing...
You should still be under warranty; change the belt ASAP! If is snaps and customer error or nrgligence is found to the the cause, your warranty can be effected!
