ok i just bout 17in rims and 205-40-17 tires, i have a 97 gt and i was wondering if anyone has experienced rubbing with 17s and a accent?

Several questions come up:
How wide are the rims?
Is the car lowered (haven't looked at your profile)?
If your rims are too wide or the offset of off, then they will rub.
I have 15x7s, but the offset is off. They stick out a 1/4 inch to far. That quarter inch makes a big difference.

The offset should be within spec, however stock springs are springy. Eibach makes a nice lowering spring that holds up well. With this setup, rubbing might happen if it is very heavy in the rear.
I'm going to ask what tires you have because believe it or not it really does matter, When I first got the rims for my Accent I had previously 16x7 inch Motegi MR7 with a 42mm offset and had no rubbing what so ever , I bought 17x7 BSA 259 wheels on 205/40 Prodigy tires and I was rubbing like you wouldn't believe, I switched over to Ventus tires by Hankook<<<<-----Korean Tires on a Korean Car. and the rubbing disapeared in the front and went down alot in the back, So I had purchased some coilovers from a 97-00 Mitsubishi Mirage and what I did was put the smaller spring from the kit only inplace of the Intrax lowering spring out back and it gave me the drop I desired with out the rubbing, apparently the springs from the coilovers are really really stiff and they dont give like the intrax lowering spring, it was really weird to because the coilover spring is like a little bigger than half the Intrax lowering spring. Anyways that's my 2 cents take it how ya like..but tires style do have to do a big deal with it. I've had problems so far with Prodigy tires and Toyo tires, never had problem with Nitto or Super GT or HanKook Ventus or Yokohama Paradas.
Well i got a 97 GT with 17x7 rims and 205/40 tires +40 offset, and also dropped on Apex springs. I still rub a bit, not much in the back cause i shaved the rear fender(then again i dont put anyone in the back) but up front i am having a few problems.....just as hec said tires make a difference. I have tires with that rim guard thing(lip) and that is where i am rubbing. I am gonna roll the fronts and see if that helps. Hope this helps a bit more

Flare the front and back guards out (your susupension/brake specialest will be able to recomend a place, or the factory that fitted your mags), to the degree that you are happy with and considering any further upgrades.
When I say flared I mean pushing the outer guards out, sorry - but that is a local oz term to me .

Sometimes tires from different manufacturers differ in size slightly. I had a car with Dunlops on that rubbed and when I put BF Goodrich on, no rubbing.
