How to stop grinding sound when changing from 1st to 2nd gear near redline
Hey all. I own a 99 hyundai excel twin cam and recently (within the last 2 months) i've noticed when i change gears from 1st to 2nd really fast near redline, it makes a grinding sound as if the clutch wasnt fully depressed. If i stomp it down that seems to do the job but that needs a really big stomp and its hard to do when moving that fast. I thought buying a short shifter would fix it as i read it would but after its installation i noticed that it only shortens the length of time the gears grind for from a second long grind to something like a half second grind, which is better i guess. I read on the forums that changing the gear oil would be good and since my car has done round 75K km's i got a shop to doit but i forgot to specify to put in redline gear oil and they put in valvoline synthetic which i've noticed little to no change sofar... I really wanna get rid of this sound as it's stopping me from driving as hard as i did...(when the gear oil was changed, no teeth were found so my gearbox is fine i think) what would fix my problem? I read that changing the gearstick linkage might doit, are these the cables attached to the gearstick? how do i change them to fix my problem? Could it be that the clutch isnt fully disengaging? could it have an air bubble in it? would bleeding the fluid and replacing it possibly make the clutch fully disengage, eliminating my problem? my last option, if this would really help, is to change the oil "again" <sighs> but i want to consider my options before doing this and i think it might lie within changing the linkage. does anyone have any suggestions?

Well, next time becareful of double posting
Secondly, to answer your question, your synchro's are going. If you want to try and avoid the grind double clutch between first and second (basically when you shift into second, you depress the clutch, go into neutral, release the clutch, depress the clutch again then shift into second). It will stop, when you get sick of that get your synchro's replaced

Yes, the grinding is usually an indication of worn synchros, however it wouldn't hurt to try a few of the things you touched upon.
Try bleeding the clutch first, or perhaps change and flush with some fresh fluid, then bleed. If possible, get your hands on a Mityvac vacuum pump - it greatly simplifies bleeding and does a better job.
You can adjust the cables at the shifter. There are adjuster nuts where the cable attaches to the shift mechanism. Initially, adjust in small increments and then test drive. Be aware of how many turns you went and in what direction.
If these measures manage to significantly reduce the grinding, change the oil again with a higher quality fluid.
If you're not doing it already, keep your revs up while shifting. I used to grind like hell between 2nd & 3rd. I made some adjustments at the cables which helped a little, but it wasn't untill I was keeping rpm's up that the grinding ceased - though even now if I completely let off the gas mid shift it will grind. Par for the course with 140k, I guess.
Getting your synchros replaced is not exactly cheap. If/When it comes to that point, you'll probably be better off grabbing a low mileage tranny off a wrecked vehicle than paying for the labor of a rebuild.

hey, good news guys! after reading a post on this forum how when changing from 1st to 2nd near redline, to pull the gearstick harder towards you (im afraid of slipping into 4th! :duh I tried this and it worked! so im thinkin that its prolly just my linkage that i have to adjust so it always changes at this position... i'm going to try it out this arvo with some test drives. I'll post my results.

Re: How to stop grinding sound when changing from 1st to 2nd gear near redline
hmm, well i took all the plastic covers off from around my gearstick and started fiddling with the linkage and only really made it worst... after about and hour of stopping and starting and messing with the linkage i was able to kinda get it back to how it was before i was screwing around with it... does anyone have any tips on how to do what im wanting to do with the linkage? I'm considering taking it to a clutch shop in town tomorrow and having them look at the linkage...i dunno, i just want this fixed!
