In ice and snow, you want a narrow tire to get maximum traction, with steel studs in the tire. A wide tire "floats" over snow and ice, thus little traction is seen. Stock mud and snow tires won't give that much traction either because the tread can't "dig" into the surface. A luggy tread might be noisy, but it has the ability to dig down and clean itself out at the same time. Studs (I know they are illegal in some areas) allow the tire to get down and help break up the hard surface.

This tire has an agressive tread plus it has holes where steel studs can be inserted so the steel pins can be an aid to traction.

I'm not sure If you guys are gettin Nokia Hakkapeliitta -tyres there but these Finnish tyres blow all you away! I have so much traction that I'm oversteering without any tricks. Fitted with accent I feel I'm much faster here than anyone.

Maybe this is some kind of commercial because I live in Finland but so? =) Many tests won btw.

The link will get you to a site that has information on restrictions on studded tires.

http://www.dnd-automotive.com/snow-tires.htm

In WA state, studs are still legal, but only during Nov. 1-Mar. 31.

In Ohio, a similar restriction is in place.
