Default Check engine light.

I have just acquired a 2000 Accent with 120Miles (200K's) on it. just for sake of clarity
2000 GSi Manual

It's been sitting for a while and today after a short drive the check engine came on.

it sometimes blinks and sometimes stays on for a long time. And there are instances in which it, i think, turns off. As expected the ECU resets when the car is shut off.

Is there any ideas here, I am going to check the code tomorrow but I am wondering about possible sources,

I searched and some results were talking about MISFIRE, what does that mean?!

I mean what misfire is but what causes the trip of that code?

I am trying new plugs tomorrow, and will try to tighten the gas cap too!(this last one is LAME AND DUMB)

thanks
Amin

Agreed, but the dealership indicated to me that if the CEL is thrown for the gas cap, it will take 30 starts before it goes out once the problem is corrected. Get it checked and post the code...

don't crank it 30 timesuzzled:

disconnect the negative on the battery for a few minutes to reset the ecu. Get the code scanned and see what the prob is that is the easiest way

Why is this such a hard concept? Its under warranty, therefore its the dealers problem. Goto the dealer and make them fix it.

is the car still under waranty?!

it is rather new but has 200K or 120 miles on it, how long is the warranty valid for this crap?!

I got the code out,
as expected P0302
cylinder 2 misfire
I reset it , went away, it was clear as long as I was on the gas reving at 2500 or so. once idling it came back,

I just noticed that the car idles rough, maybe it is just idling low due to something, but the god damn Tacho is worth crap for reading the exact RPM.

the OBDII is total garbage, you can't read ANYTHING. Not rpm nothing.

The filter was dirty so I took it out to see if that might have caused low idle>rough idle>misfire!
no luck,

I'll try changing the plugs and then fuel filter. But I have no time for it now.

Is there anything I can do to extract more data from the ECU. I am thinking of making an OBDII device but is there anything specific to Hyundai's that could help me have more option. hint, hint, Datalogger?!?!?!

Any ideas?

if you would take the time to read the post you would see he has 120K miles on it. no more warranty

like the first five times my car did this (its an 02 thats the only reason it went back to the dealership so much) they kept giving me new gas caps, i could turn it till it would turn no more and the light would still come back on, then it became the wiring harness or something, so they swaped that out twice, then my airbag light kept staying on after that so I got new airbags (because of a faulty connection or something) and then another new harness and so far no problems, minus my car accident and no air bag comming out ..lol sooo thats what happened with my car ...

I try to do my home work on this thing and report the results back

once I get this problem resolved I would post up my conclusion so if someone finds this thread in a search there is something useful in it.

do these cars have knock sensors??????

But any more ideas?!
Gas Cap
Spark Plugs
Timin
Fuel Octane
Wires
Low idle?!

Hey all

I just found a chance to go back to the topic,

I changed the wires and air filter(immaterial), the same code popped up again.

I switched the wire on the coil, 2 is connected to 3, 3 to 2. still the same code for the same cylinder P0302.

I figured if I keep the car reving. more than 1500 or so the error isn't generated. only when it idles for 30 seconds,

I couldn't change the plugs, what socket do I need for the stock NGK, not a 14mm not a 16.
is it standard or 15mm?!?!

any input?

Thanks
Amin
