Default 95 Accent Tranny Questions.......

I have been looking at a 95 Accent that somebody wants to trade me for a project vehicle that I have. I think it would be a decent car to drive back and forth from work, about 15 miles each way but the car has a problem......

The guy that has it says it needs a tranny in it, but rather than just putting a tranny in it I am questioning the car as to if the tranny is really bad?

I dont know nothing about these cars so i thought I would come and ask you guys here.

The car is a 96 Hyundai aAccent Gt with about 90000 miles.

I asked him what was wrong with the tranny and here is the information he gave me through e-mail:

"last time i drove it it got around town, just slipped between 2and3 . but my buddy went out of town with it and said it didnt handle the hills worth a ****. kept slippin out and in gear. i seen some trannys around 500 and the boys at the auto shop at my college will do the install for nothin but parts. i bet it would go across town fine but wouldnt try to go too far. other than that its a very nice car. i just aint into tuners"

The car is in really nice shape the only other problem is the drivers window is out of track.

I guess I am wondering what else it could be, I mean could it be that it leaked fluid from the pan and they just used regualar ATF in it? Could it be a sensor not working? Could the tranny really just be a pile of junk?

Like I said I dont know therefore I am asking you guys for input.

The trade to me is worth $600 which is what I want for my project. I dont really want to get something and have to have a tranny put in it. But I am considering it if it would be cheap.

X3's were prone to tranny problems with the automatic.....my old one had the same issue....

first thing, buy a new transmission filter, fluid, and some Lucus transmission fix. you can buy all of this at a parts store. you can do all this iin a few hours in your driveway.

change it all, and add the correct amount of Lucus. It wasnt a permanent fix but it didnt slip for about 50,000kms after that.

good luck man.

Thanks for the thoughts, that was what I was thinking too. Wondered if a filter and fluid change and then some Lucas might help it out.

Anybody know what a rebuild runs for one of these things or is it better to just buy a new tranny?

I'm seriously thinking about doing this trade, just am not sure if its worth my time or not.

Also its got like 90,000 miles on it so I am sure it would need new belts and a timing belt. Is the timing belt a hard one to do?

I'm pretty mechanically inclined and would do the work myself.

nah the timing belt isnt too bad to do your self, just need a jack to support the engine because you have to undo the passenger side motor mount. but its not too bad of a job, maybe 6 beer.

i wouldnt waste your money on a rebuild, my suggestion would be a manual swap down the road.

and the X3 is a good investment, cheap insurance, great on gas, fun to drive, and its bulletproof, the only major thing with mine was the tranny, but its normal.

good luck
