My 1998 Excel has a rattle in the pistons. I've been told by Hyundai that it's a stock standard fault, and all excels do it. Somehow, I think they just dont wanna fix my car. Anyone else have this problem?

A rattle eh? My 1997 Accent (same as your Excel in Oz) makes a sort of rattle, but only when I use regular fuel. If I fill with higher octane stuff (89 or 92/94 instead of 87) it goes away or at least is quieter.
I don't know if it's the same noise as your car is making, but perhaps could make a difference.
Good luck, and I hope it's not serious!

this is a common problem with 1500dohc excel in oz and the eqivelent in usa, the nose is actually nothing major, it is the noise of the time gear in the head. It is different to most of the other cars of the same era as it has a hydralic lifter setup. like some of the twin cam nissan engines.
The noise is occurs when the lobe of the cam comes into contact with the lifter and also when the lifter comes into contact with the valve.
You can fix it and order new lifters but it will start again after about 10,000 kms, your choice.
The statement of the noise coming from bad fuel is actually another problem, known as pinging or detonation, which can be caused from bad fuel.
If this is the problem, by better fuel or get a tune up as this will eventually kill your pistons and engine.
An alternative to listening to the noise of the engine is buy a loud exhaust or a stereo, or a free flowing airfilter and listen to the good old induction raw.
well its actually more of a tapping that a rattle. And by the way, i DO have a loud exhaust and stereo. Have a looksie. But anyway, the hotter the car gets, the louder the tapping seems to be. Who knows?

My 96 accent also has a rattle noise almost every time it shifts, but is only when I kick the gas or I speed up fast.
I'm taking it tho the garage to see what it is!
Any of you guys have any idea of what could it be??? please reply!
Ive also got a 96 accent but mine makes a hising sound when i accelerate or hit the gas pedel fast its more like a lower sound of a dump valve, its nothing to worry about, i actually find it pretty cool.
