there nice to have, but on a FWD car, there not needed. on a RWD car, there definitly needed though. just because of how the engine moves. ive done many exhaust (including two of my cars, and soon to be my tib) without flex pipes installed, and have NEVER had any issues.

I kinda like mine.

But i figure if you have poly mounts or window weild your engine wont flex much, and therefore a flexpipe probally inst needed. Shot engine mounts and you get a messed up exhaust pipe. Eh... I would, just cause.

You sir are wrong, a flex pipe is most definatly needed on a front wheel drive car becuase the engine is mounted transversally and it rocks back and forth instead of side to side. On a RWD car since the engine is mounted longitudinally and the exhaust is inline it rocks with the engine and the hangers absorb the shock so no flex pipe is used. FWD NEEDS a Flex Pipe.

Flex pipes are not needed on RWD cars, they are needed on FWD. I know this from personal experience, ive been working on cars for 15+ years. Ive owned an 88 Toyota Pickup (no flex pipe found) an 80 BMW 320I (again no flex pipe) a 90 GMC Sierra 1500 (hmmm thats weird no flex pipe either :P) all where RWD. The FWD cars ive owned have all had flex pipes.

I was thinkin of goin' without a flexpipe on my Elantra but I never got around to weldin' up one. I would have to agree with stiffer motor mounts and softer exhaust hangers if you go without one.

Flex pipes are needed on FWD. Even if cutting your springs is successful at lowering a car that doesn't mean it's the right way to lower it. Typical problems you will have with no flex pipe (or flex couplings) on a FWS car is cracked exhaust manifold or header, seperation at the front of the muffler, broken collector, and premature catalytic converter failure.

RWD you can turn alleviate the 1" or so of vertical lift on the exhaust over the 15 feet of piping and exhaust hangers after the engine. With FWD you have a direct twisting force on the pipe under the engine and the pipes themselves cannot easily flex to accomodate the upwards force.

I can draw a diagram showing why geometry of a solid exhaust on a FWD is a lot worse than on a RWD if you need.

I have no doubt your exhaust is holding up without a flex pipe man, but it's not the right way to do it and it's much more prone to have problems, even if they haven't happened yet.
