Default Pulse B generator buggered?

Hey everyone,
I have been reading threads on this site for a few weeks and finally decided to register.

I own a 2003 1.6 accent with automatic transmission (95,000km). I bought the car about 6 months ago with no problems at all. It is a great car to drive but oevr the past few months the auto has started to play up. I will try and explain what happens....

A couple of months ago the first to second gear change became sluggish and would pause for approx 2 seconds before changing into second gear. After it first happened it happened off and on for another week then eventually always does it now. However, it never has the delayed change IF you take it to 4000rpm or over then it changes perfectly. every other gear change was perfect except the 1st to 2nd.

about a month after this started occuring (not sure if it is related to 1st - 2nd problem) the car started on the odd occasion to hold first gear and rev out, forcing me to back off and try again. after a few redlines it would snap into second gear, and generally not go back into first gear for at least the next 5 minutes. This only happened once every week or so now it happens pretty much every time i drive it and it does the holding/snapping back into gear in every gear now not just 1st and second.

After some advice i changed the transmission oil but that didn't affect it. I then took it in to get a diagnostic test and they said the pulse B generator was showing error codes and when they wiped the errors off they came straight back. They said this means there is a short somewhere and wanted to charge me $1000 to look for the short, and it could cost more. They were a pain to deal with and i dont trust them so i was after some opinions as to if this sounds like the pulse B generator, and how to see if this is definately causing the problem?

Sorry for the long post i just wanted to give as much info as possible, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I am the original owner of the same vehicle that you have.

I had a similar problem with the tranny so I took it to the dealer. I had only around 20k miles on it. Since it was still under warranty they fixed it for free.

You might check to see if your transmission is still under warranty.

Default warranty

Thanks for the response,

I don't think the car would still be covered under warranty because the guy i bought it off did the servicing on the car himself. i would presume they won't cover the car because of this?

I'm just a bit unsure whether the pulse b generator is definately the problem and if it is will it fix both of the problems? I don't really want to spend the money to get this fixed only to find out that its something else?

A 2003 model hyundai should still be under warrenty (dont all newer hyundais come with a 5year 130000km warrenty)...
Just take it in and act dumb about the previous owner...
Take a look in the log book (should have all services in there) and see when it last had a dealer service...

If the pulse B generator is screwed and its in teh transmission why not just replace the transmission with one from the wreckers (will definatly cost less than $1000)...
Even buying one new from hyundai shouldnt be that much...

Cheers

this is a common problem with most hyundai transmissions, there are numerous tsbs on the same problem here in the US.

I had my pulse generator solenoid pack(funny speak for electronic valve body) replaced under warranty at 75,000 miles which was still in the window for the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty which is standard here.

Hyundai is goofy on warranty transfers. I was told by a warranty rep for hyundai that if the car transfers owners the factory warranty goes dead.

1000 dollars even in your currency seems a lot for simple diagnostic work. Given you have to drop the trans pan to try to find the problem but if the american models have had the same problem you would think hyundai would have the same tsbs anywhere in the world.

Good luck with your problem, it is definately something that needs to be addressed because the problem will only get worse if not fixed.

after ringing up a hyundai dealer they said $135 for the pulse generator. Does this sound like a decent figure? How do you install it is it something i can do myself with a reasonable but not huge amount of mechanical knowledge?
Thanks again for the replies

I would think it is a bugger to get to...
Probably a fairly easy install...

Also $135 is a decent price (from a dealer)...
You could try going to a wreckkers and scrounging a couple of them for the same money but theres no guarentee that they will work...

Just dont ask them to replace the little surface mount LED in the AC button (i was quoted $180 for that)...

Have you taken it to a dealer to get a service...
You should, just say that you only just bought the car and noticed that it was due for a service, mention the problem, they will check it out for you as they do the service...
(worked for me when i mentioned that my low fuel light didnt work)...

Cheers

it isn't an easy job if your going to be working on your back on jack stands. You have to drain the trans fluid then drop the pan and you will see the solenoid pack. The toughest thing about the job is to make sure you get the trans pan sealed up properly because it will leak if not done right.

The PG assembly is on the exterior of the case. One is on top and the other is down lower on the side.

I just looked up the tsb and here is what the service recommendations state:
SOLENOID ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT:

8.Using a screwdriver, remove the clip and push the solenoid connector into the transaxle case. (On earlier models, use two screwdrivers to push the tabs of the solenoid connector inward, then push the connector into the transaxle case).

9.Remove the oil temperature sensor from the bracket. Remove the oil filter. Remove ten 10 mm bolts and remove the valve body.

10.Remove the solenoids and carefully reinstall the new solenoids in the same location. Tighten the bolts to 3-4 lb-ft (40-60 kg.cm).

11.Confirm the 0-ring is installed on the top center of the valve body and the valve body pipe is installed on the top of the valve body.

12.Carefully align the manual valve on the valve body to the manual control shaft and reinstall the valve body. Install the bolts and torque to 7-9 lb.ft (100-120 kg.cm).
13.Reinstall the temperature sensor to the bracket.
14.Push the solenoid connector through the hole in the case. Reinstall the clip on the solenoid connector.
15.Reinstall the oil filter and tighten the bolts to 4-5 lb.ft (50-70 kg.cm).
16.Install a new pan gasket and reinstall the oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 7-9 lb.ft (100-120 kg.cm).
17.Add SPIII ATF (approximately 4-1/2 quarts for Accent, 5 quarts for Elantra/Tiburon) and check the level with the engine idling in Neutral. Confirm the ATF is at the correct level when the ATF is at normal operating temperature (70-100°C, 159-212°F).
