Default Just picked up a 2000 Accent.

Its the base model with the 1.5l 12-valve engine, but im needing an economy car now as a poor *** college kid, and the 89 rx7 turbo i drove around in high school that got 9 mpg on premium isn't gonna happen, anyway I sold that car to pay tuition this year...and damn do i miss it.

So I picked this Accent up for $400 because I'm pretty sure it needs a new transmission. I drove halfway across Barrie in reverse tonight to get her home.

I'm wondering if any of you could offer some tips about how to go about diagnosing the issue.

The transmission fluid is black, and the only gear that works is R. (slushbox)....I think any possibilities of it just being a linkage or something are gone, but you never know.....and a transmission swap doesn't intimidate me anyways; I've done far more complicated things successfully before. Like somehow making a 1989 turbo rx7 run on a non-turbo ecu and pull hard to 13psi. I know that shouldn't have worked; but it did, made 250 rwhp .

I'm going to call around scrapyards tomorrow and do my best to fix it. Im wondering, though, if i could just swap it over to a manual? Or would I also then need to swap the ecu from a car that came with the manual? And what transmissions will fit? Any accent that came with the 1.5l or does it have to be 00-06? will the 95-99 ones fit?

Thanks all.

yanked the tranny out this afternoon, the fluid looked like beef gravy. And it smelled worse than manual tranny fluid.

And goddamn it was a pain; in all my years working on cars, I've never had to drop a subframe in order to take out a tranny. Anyways, I'm going to crack her open tomorrow to see what's innside....by the condition of the tranny fluid; I guarantee the valve bodies are going to be completely gummed up, and the belts are going to be fried.

Junkyard trannies got for $200, so ill be pickin one up next week..Also found out its going to need a new right fron ball joint, but that's no biggie.

Props to my buddy alex for stickin it out with me for half a pizza and two beers.

Looking at your pics it appears that this accent probably rear eneded someone. (Primer hood unpainted bumper) I would assume that the rad may have been hurt and maybe pinched one of the tranny cooler lines (tranny cooler is in the rad) if the tranny cooler line got pinched you cooked your fluid (explains the black sluggy fluid) and cooked the bands in the tranny. I would be very careful about replacing the tranny without checking that rad really well else you'll just do the same thing again its a nice thing about the accent its cheap on parts new engine tranny combos for like $500 its a nice car to drive until it rots out.

ill post another link to the pics.....it worked on other forums no problem....im using firefox though..

Anyways the damaged front end is from a deer. The panels are all replaced, just needs paint.
The only thing that was still a little bent was the front brace, and thats straight now.

The transmission lines are all fine, nothing wrong there....I checked to make sure it wasnt something simple until all my options were exhausted, because dropping transaxles is less than fun.

ill post a link to those pics in a sec, then i'll go snap some more af how the car sits now in my garage.
