Default New Project, 3rd hand little Known?

New Project, 3rd hand little Known? I traded for this car Yesterday and drove it eighty miles home through the mountains of Kentucky. The car appears to have recently been converted to a five speed manual, and I have to finish mounting the shifter completely. It was only held in by one bolt when I went to pick it up, we added a second bolt and drove home. Due to the poor shifter temporary anchoring, it was hard to get into the gears at speed!
The engine runs very well! It has headers, custom free flowing exhaust with a dual flowmaster muffler.
I drove home 8o miles on three seventeen in Niche wheels and a right rear fourteen inch wheel, I do not recommend this! At speeds around 45 the right rear wheel began to hop and vibrate. three 17s have 205/40 R17 Kumhos and the fourth is just a spare. I do have the fourth mag, but it needs a new tire.
The car is very loud, but fun. It has the remnants of a cold air intake going to the functioning hood scoop, but the filter is missing! The air condition has been removed, as well as the radio.
There is no Tachometer, the speedometer is not hooked up, turn signals do not work?
Front window cranks have quit, and the passengers door handle is missing. I have some work to do, but a good start. The paint is low budget and old, but looks cool at 55+ mph or 20 feet away!

Default Mangled? I don't know about Mangled.

Mangled? I don't know about Mangled. It is in need of some mature care. I believe the guys doing it had a good idea in mind, but follow through was lacking. They evidently watched The Fast and the Furious and went about it to fast and to furious. Missing completion on each thing the did. I hope to actually finish the transmission job, the door and door panels and I must put an air filter on it!
Mechanically it seems pretty good, only 79,000 documented miles and the engine is still seems strong.
I admit, i just don't know much about these little cars, everything I look up other than here appears to be pretty typical family econo information. What do I need to look for as weakness to fix, motor mounts, transmounts? Are there solid or poly mount upgrades available. Do Tiburon suspension/mechanical parts fit, if so are they truly performace based? What could they have done to improve performance that may not be obvious to me?
All guidance is appreciated, my other car/ daily driver is a 1988 BMW 325IS, so this is a big change, but it has good power for it size and beats my BMW by about 12+ MPG! BMW 23 MPG vs Hyundai 35 MPG
Could some one explain the X3 moniker?

Welcome to the site.

X1 = 86-89 Excel
X2 = 90-94 Excel
X3 = 95-99 Accent
LC = 00-02 Accent
LC2 = 03 Accent
MC = Newest Accent

No real meaning as far as I know.

From the front fascia, your car looks to be a 1995-1997 Accent. Tiburon coilovers could fit. The rear suspension changed a bit mid 1997, and the Tiburon coilovers are known to fit the Accents after mid 1997.

Quote:
The mounting points are identical, however the 1995-1997 Accents used a smaller diameter strut and different springs (shaped differently). If you replace the entire assembly, the complete strut, spring, and upper strut mount from any 98-05 Accent will bolt-in.
You could do a break swap with Elantra/Tiburon parts.
My new Tib brakes (brake swap complete!!) [UPDATED with how-to]

Unfortunately the link for the DIY article no longer works.

There are coilovers.
Coilover options for a 98 Accent

You can also DIY "window weld" mounts. There might be some kits out there for with mounts.

polyurethane mount..taking to long 2 cure?

Polyurethane Motor Mounts

I'm sure there are other little things you could do.

i have plenty of turbo stuff I need to sell sometime. I need to post up what I got soon.

If you like autocrossing i'd recommend reading my blog in the fastest car in the world section of the board.

I would just start reading posts. There is plenty of good info on here if you know where to look.

parts are available aftermarket (kspec, evofusion, ksport, whiteline) and oem hyundai(lots of parts from newer accents, elantras and tiburons) that you can retrofit. all you have to do is spend the time to read up on how to do it.

in my experience with my 2000 and 1999 accents a good suspension will transform the car into a peppy run about that is loads of fun to drive.

i've got plenty of pictures and right ups of both of my cars on here to give you some insight on the direction you can take with your project.

good luck with your project

this car wouldnt loook to bad if you got a stock hood, painted the car one color and took off the oversized rims and switched them to some 15's...and took off the rear spoiler, but whats with the body molding going up to the hood on the front fenders?
