Default Help.....need advice- hyundai accent 2002

my husband is the mechanic.. i am the computer operator (but i do know alot about cars)

We are getting code P0722 - output speed sensor. everyso often the car gets locked into 2/3rd gear and stays there until it releases.

Q1... is this the SAME as the Pulse Generator Sensor??
Q2 .. there is discussion on reprogramming.. my husband thinks his part is ok.... as he did some diagnosis on it... is it as simple as reprogramming??
Q3- the service dealer says these parts go frequently... should we replace the part first... then think about reprogramming??

Q4.. is there a way for US to reprogram vehicle by ourselves..??

We really want to just fix it cheaply until we can find another vehicle to buy..
but want it running ok to possibly sell it..

Any advice would be appreciated from the "experts"

Thank you!

q1 - no, this is the transmission speed sensor

q2 - not likely, but its possible the TCM (transmission control module) is fried. try disconnecting your battery for a while to clear the computer.

q3 - sounds about right to me. much more likely that the sensor is gone than the computer software. however, a reprogram is quite cheap - my dealer here quoted me $40 and if its under a TSB they should do it for free. check at Hyundai Service Website. you need to get an account, but its free and very worthwhile. all hyundai factory manuals

q4 - no

finally, the trans getting locked in 2/3 gear is actually a failsafe. according to hmaservice.com here are your possible causes:

● Signal circuit is open or short.
● Sensor power circuit is open
● Sensor ground circuit is open
● Faulty OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR
● Faulty PCM/TCM

given the year of the car, i'd say its far more likely to have a bad sensor than to have bad wiring or a bad TCM. again, check your TSB's and see if that helps. quote the TSB # when you visit a dealer.

hope that helps.

Thanx Zero...

But now we are really confused..

the dealer called the part the pulse generator sensor = to vehicle speed sensor with input and output sensors together ... you are calling it a transmission speed sensor.. is that the same as a Throttle Position sensor???

Also .. we have checked the hma service site and there are several tsb's....
02-40-17 & 03-40-16 were the ones we saw.. and they call it a pulse generator code..

are we talking the same thing?

the TSB we looked at said our sensors are fine... but we are afraid if we bring in in for diagnosis... they will tell us to replace anyway.. at 90/ hr labor charge.... so we are weary...

any thoughts??

Our dealer says TSB's are not fee fixes.. unless ? you are within warranty - which we are not...

so we are still looking at which part to get??

Also...

i understand the repair manual is ON the Hma service site.. but i cannot figure out how to locate it... can you tell me how to get to it?

both sensors are wired together in one harness, they could be referring to the whole assembly as the pulse generator sensor, that i can't say for sure.

what exactly did the TSB say? was it a TSB to reprogram the computer for a problem such as this? if so, you can approach it the same way i did for an oxygen sensor. there was a TSB which indicated that i may need an ECU reprogram/update.

instead of taking it in and saying 'here fix it' i quoted the TSB, and gave them explicit instructions to ONLY check that the software was up to date and if not update it. other than that leave it alone. therefore, they do not have your authorization to do any diagnostics and if they do so just don't pay them - its against the law to charge you for services that you do not explicitly authorize.

the cost was only for 1/2hr. labor so they were only going to charge me $40 - to make sure the computer wasn't a problem. i looked at it as a diagnostic step. in the end they did not charge me because it was under the TSB. i'd contact hyundai directly to be sure that they will not cover this problem if it falls under the TSB. it seems some they pay for others they do not - even out of warranty. btw, my accents was also out of warranty for this episode.

to get to the shop manuals, simply log into their site with your account you made (assuming you have done so) and then just click on 'shop' and you'll get the shop manual. there are also wiring schematics, trouble code information, and you can even download your owners manual in pdf format if you lost it.
