To tell you the truth for the last four years I've driven a 95 Z28, dynoed at 300RWHP/380 RWTRQ. Unfortunately I had to sell it a few weeks ago and I bought a 2000 Accent, 5 speed, with 168k for $1000. I think it's a great deal considering the car still seems like new. Most cars for a thousand bucks either need a trans, motor, or are old and rusty. Well I want to do mods to it but I dont want a "riceburner". I've always liked the thought of having, a somewhat normal imported car that's fast as hell. A sleeper. Are there anyone here that has rebuilt their motor, added a cam, ported/polished there heads or anything like that. As far as I can see it bolt ons are a waste of time. A horse power or two seems tops for an Accent. Crap, I had EVERY bolt-on mod you can think of on my Camaro and the some of them didn't do anything. So if I were to buy a Camaro again, I'd go straight to the head/cam package immediately for $4000, instead of $4000 in mods that didn't do a whole lot. For the Accent to be truly fast a turbo is crucial. With such a low curb weight, 200 HP might be plenty HP. Has anyone "built" there motor and added a turbo? If so many much HP did you dyno? ET times? I really like my Accent but I just cant rice it out, and everything for it's so cosmetic. Maybe I'll have to go to a local machine shop with questions. If anyone has anything to say or input on aftermarket cams or anything let me know.

I don't got any of what your saying but you could rebuild your engine with the a engine rebuild kit they usually have on ebay it comes with valves pistons and gaskets and everything you need I think it would work great but if you are looking for power you should look into the beta engine swap so you will be starting off with a fresh motor only thing is thease are 40 horsepower more then the motor you have now and havemore of a selection of performance parts for the motor. The accent rally car uses this motor and they turboed it to 300 horsepower and can beat a skyline r-34 gtr vspec 2 in a quarter mile. I have heard some beta engines made it to 400 horse. That not might seem so much coming from a guy who drive comaros and so on such as yourself but 400 horsepower to a 2100 pound car can get you into the 12's easy if you now how to launch the car. But good luck to you there are some people on this site that have rebuilt engines and a guy with nothing but performance cams and he said that alone made a good differencer. Happy tuning.

You have the 1.5L right? If you want to go fast in a straight line cheap, cut to the chase and either do a motor swap or turbo the 1.5L. N/A mods will not make you faster than a 15sec car with the stock motor.
The turbo kit is relatively straightforward: Get a scoupe manifold, standard flange T25, scoupe downpipe (or custom), Beta injectors, safc or other fuel control device, and a better fuel pump. Intercooler optional, but recommended, and the setup should be good for high 13's if driven/tuned right.
Beta swap is also straight forward, toss the accent motor, bolt in the beta2, rewire the ecm plug and use a Beta2 ecm. You'll need to fabricate the passenger side motor mount though, and possibly axles if you use the tib tranny. Good for a low/mid-15sec car with a stock beta, solid 14's with n/a mods.

I wouldn't turbo a motor with 168K on it. IMO, your best option right now is swapping in the 2.0 Beta from the Tib/Elantra. You get about 20 more horses out the box and much more potential. Plus, you can easily pick up a low mileage Beta for under $500. Search and browse the "Hybrid" forum, there's complete parts lists for the swap.
It's a win win situation, low mileage, more reliable motor with a few extra ponies as a bonus. Then later on you can turbo the Beta if need be.
It seems people always start with the motor, but I've noticed a large gain on the funmeter with the install of the phantom grip. It'll set you back a couple bucks but well worth it in my opinion and you can put in that VHR clutch while you've got everything apart. U-turns are billions of times more fun now.. Then, sure, go for your motor upgrades (get some wider wheels 15x6~7 if you haven't already).
Edit:
if you are looking for a beta with or without accessories and ecu, give http://www.allhyundaiisuzuparts.com/ a call (dont fill out the form on the website, they'll never contact you back ) When I called last year, a beta+accessories+ecu+shipping to MD was about 1200$

See I would think that 400 HP in an accent would be 11's at least. 400 HP in a Camaro is a mid/high 12 with the right traction, and they weigh 3600 lbs.
But thanks for your help guys. It's hard for me to know what setups will get you what times, so I had to ask. I'll still say though that if you were honest to God putting down to the wheels 200 HP you run somewhere in the 14's. Maybe not though. I'm not too knowledgable yet as far as Hyundai performance.

Honest to god 200whp with traction should net 13's easily. Traction is the issue, not power, as there's no room for good sized slicks in our fenders and even if there were, I'd be worried about the axles holding up. Our gearing is low enough that you wouldnt want a short tire for fear of runnig out of gear (and shifting 5 times down the track, 4 if you start in second which would probably be a good idea at this point). Remember that 4th tops out around 100mph.
Is this going to be a serious drag effort, or just something to bring to test n' tune night to scare people?

Haha.. I'm not really sure yet. I've been finding those Beta motors for like $500 or so, so that seems like a good deal. My cars got about 170k on it so that'll be coming sooner or later. There's no point in spending $1200 at a shop to rebuild the stock engine. But for the past four summers I've been racing my old 95 Z28 at the track and I really want to have something to run. I'm not wasting $50 to take three passes in an 18 second Accent. Stupid question but what does a 2000 accent actually run in the quarter? I just want to know how bad it is. I sleeper does sound like an excellent idea. Screw the fart can, and body kit. People at the track would like a stock looking piece of crap running 13's better than a riceburner.
