New Hyundai SUVs on the horizon

Just when you thought there were enough sport utility vehicles to go around, Hyundai has a couple of new ones in the works.
A Ward's Interactive report pubslished Feb. 5 revealed that South Korea's number one automaker has plans for a small cross/utility vehicle (CUV) in about a year and a half, according to David Ossenmacher, a chief product planner who was quoted in the report.
The CUV, which is smaller than the Santa Fe model, will likely be shown at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. Ossenmacher said the vehicle will "shake up the market."
Another larger SUV, close to the Ford Explorer in size, will follow about a year after the CUV, according to Ward's. The report speculated that the new vehicles would be built in a new U.S. plant, for which Hyundai is currently scouting locations.
The new SUV is still under study, but Ward's said it will most likely be of unibody construction. The new truck will be designed by Hyundai Motor America's new North American design centre based in Irvine, Calif.
Ossenmacher said Hyundai is also studying the possibility of a minivan. The segment has contracted slightly but imports have taken a bigger share. Hyundai does not, however, want to share a platform with the Kia Sedona, Ward's revealed.
