Default Import Questions

Hey sorry I really didn't know where this ought to go but I think it fits here...

So I was looking at getting a new Hyundai pretty soon and was wondering if you guys know anything about importing. I have a family friend who is a pilot and is in Korea about every other weekend. I've only been playing with the idea and havn't done a whole lot of research but some questions are:

To your knowledge would a car directly from Korea be any cheaper because it is for a different market?

How much on average does it cost to ship a car?

Do Korean market Hyundai's meet U.S. emission standards, etc?

Would it be possible to make payments on a car purchased in another country in the same way you do for a car bought at the local dealer?

Thanks to anyone in advance who might happen to know anything about this, I may be searching for all the wrong things but I'm having a tough time finding any info about importing.

i think you would be better off just buying a car in the states. used hyundais are always pretty cheap, just buy one with a few miles on it and save cash instead of buying new. i bet it would cost more to ship it there then the car would be worth

Actually buying a car in Korea is way more expensive than it is in the US just like Japan limited space=higher car prices to deter people from buying them. Probably a KDM would be twice the price of USDM. Then figure about 5k of shipping on top of that.. Not even close to cost effective.

not true. I just looked up the prices on koreas website. Top model elantra/avante 16k. Just about what it would cost us. Importing stuff TO korea is twice as expensive because of taxes.

but yeah.. bad idea IMO

yeah i've gotten mixed review but for the most part i figured it would be more expensive. but about the shipping, i've heard things from as low as like $1000 to apparently $5000 so who knows. i think it would be more trouble than it would be worth so thank you guys for the input
