Default Technical Serveice Bulletin

I just got this in the mail and I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with their Hyundai's.

Subject: Engine Knocking noise due to use of aftermarket oil filters.

Some Hyundais vehicles have experience an engine knocking noise when using aftermarket oil filters. Aftermarket oil filters may be constructed differenly and use differnt materials then genuine Hyundai oil filters. This may change the specs of the oil filter leading to the pressure variations within the engine causing engine knocking noise

Please insure that customers are aware that genuine Hyundai oil filters must be used to aviod engine damage.

Affected Vehciles:

All Hyundai Vehicles

Warrenty Information:

Oil changes performed due to the engine knocking noise when an aftermarket oil filter has been used is not a warrantable repair.

Now out of all the cars that I have had I didn't have to use the manufactors oil filters. This to me seems like a ploy for the computer to try to get more money out of us, I could be wrong. Can someone shed some more light on this.

I'm pissed that I just read this after I already got my oil change done.

This has been circulated for a couple years now. The problem is aftermarket filters are designed with a specific flow rate in mind that the engine needs. Aftermarket filters don't necessarily have this.

Ive noticed that Fram and Penzoil filters cause a knock. Bosch and K&N filters do not.

My best edumicated guess says that if you go cheap.. your going to pay more. Make sense? Pony up the extra .50 cents or $1.00 and get a nice oil filter. It pays off.

Hyundai filters are overpirced, only go to the dealership if you have free oil changes or what not. Change it yourself for half the cost.

Yeah I don't go to a dealership to get my oil changes done. I am going to go and talk to my mechanic today and ask them what kind of oil filter they use. From what I know they use ACDelco and some other brand. So with this bulletin there isn't much I should be worried about? I just don't want to start getting that knocking noise and be totally screwed on getting it fixed.

How loud is this knocking noise? Is there a video out on it so that I can notice it when I hear it?
