Default Tyre Selection Excel Sprint

Does anyone know if 205/45/R16 tyres would fit my standard little darlin'
I have tried 205/50/R16 - but they hit the strut & mud flab.
My rims are 16 x 7.5" Big suckers.

Considering dropping down to a 195/45/R16 if the 205's aren't suitable.

Hi Miss Daisy,

Welcome to the forums.

205's can fit, but you will most likely need to either get the guards lipped and/or add camber bolts to give soem negative camber at the rear. 195/50.15's on 15*6.5" rims will generally almost always rub on the rear of an X3 Excel, but the amount of rubbing can be minimised by ensurring the correct offset rim is used.

Also there are some brands/makes of tyres that will rub more than otherss. The 195mm or 205mm width referes to the widht where teh tyre makes contact with the road, and not the maximum width of the tyreitself. Some makes/model of tyres have a very square sidewall, whereas others will have the sidewall that bulges out quite a bit.

Check with your local wheel and tyre shop before burign yoru news rims and/or tyres, and if they are any good they will be able to point you in the right direction to ensure you get the correct wheels and tyres for your Excel with the least amount of hassles.

Cheers

just put 195 50 R15's on my baby and Bretton knows his shit..!!! it doesnt rub much, only on sharp turns at good speed. And my rims are the perfect offset for the car too.. When i do some suspension mods, hopefully i can solve the rubbin dilemma..!

Geez i have 17's lowered 2 inches and guards rolled with 205/40 series tyres and rubbing is minimal mostly on really sharp turns which I rarely do anyways. I have correct offset though but i thought if my 17's bearly rub how can 15" or 16"rub.

Well gee Miss Daisy, they sure is some purdy wide rims you got there, shucks.
Serious voice now.......What size were your original tyres? You can use this calculator http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html to work out which wider and lower profile tyres will match the diameter of your originals.

I suggest 205/14/16 tyres. Rolling diameter is more or less same as stock. I had this size in the Federal S595s and performed pretty well.

My 15x6.5 195/50 speedys used to scrub a fair bit, i just got 17x7.5's on 205/40 with the guards rolled and get scrubbing only on really tight corners. Its the magic offset number which must do it i guess. I was rather amazed they got 17x7.5's on there at all.

15x6 Speedy Hyperfangs here and no scrubbing at all (rolled guards)

before they got rolled though and the car was at stock height, they only used to scrub on one side, however that was the side i had replaced a tyre with a different brand one (bad puncture). I had Uniroyals all round and the scrubbing one was a goodyear eagle
