Default importing cars from USA to Canada

there's a good post here:

http://www.4g61t.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8023

that links to here:

http://www.riv.ca/english/TC_admis_list_nov03_Eng.PDF

that gives a good explanation of the rules about importing cars from the uSA:

- all cars over 15 years can be imported,

- some cars less than 15 yrs cannot be imported,

- some cars less than 15 yrs can be imported as long as they already comply or are altered to comply with canadian bumper, day lite running lites, child seat anchor, VIN labelling rules.

so you can't import a mitsu evo at all, but you can still go to florida and find a nice early elantra to do a 4g63t swap.

The 15 year rule also applies for any car from any country I believe. There have been waves of 1988 Silvia's, Skylines and other cars from Japan coming over recently.

wirmpolter, the cost to import a foreign car from the USA to canada is:

6.1% duty
+ excise tax if it has air conditioning (i think it's $100)
+ excise tax if it is a heavy vehicle (over 2000kg)
+ 7.0% GST
+ 8.0% PST(ontario)

so it's basically 21%.

more information by calling 1 800 461-9999. follow the prompts for importing a car into canada. sit thru 6 minutes of automated messages and then you can talk to real person.

RTPscoupe, like RedAGT mentioned, the impression i get is that, if the car is over 15 years old, you can import it, even if it wasn't manufactured to meet US or canadian standards. this surprises me, but i guess the attitude is the same that applies to emissions testing, that is, if the car is real old, there's so few of them, the govt doesn't care about them. BTW the newspaper today says the ontario govt is going to phase out emissions testing.

edit: don't know the details about the newer skylines. i'd guess they're illegal in the USA and canada . but once they're 15 years old, they can be imported into canada.

edit: found this on ebay.ca:
