Hello All, I was hoping to tap into the knowledge base here for some help with a little problem that I am having with my 2001 Elantra . I recently had to replace both driver and passenger side drive axels (did the job myself). The job I think went pretty smooth. I followed the directions in the haynes guide to get the job done. I drain the transaxel oil and replaced it with 2.6 quarts of new transaxel oil. The problem that I am having is this: when I started my car everything was fine until I got to about 55-60 miles per hour. When I reach these higway speeds my engine light comes on and the error code is P0501. I searched on this site and saw that it is the vehicle speed sensor. Now I know when I removed the passenger side drive axel that the one of the speed sensors was screwed to the dust cover of that RF wheel. I did unscrew the nut to get this line out of my way but did not tear or put any undo stress on that line. Now the speedometer works fine and the car is a stick shift and there are no wierd noises coming from the transmission area so I am baffled by this problem. What is even more wierd is that I removed the battery cable hoping to reset the ecm and that worked as long as i did not get up to 55-60 mph. I drove my car intown for a few hours and no engine light, but the minute I got on the freeway the engine light came on and the scan tool showed P0501. Any help or guideance that you guys could give me would be extrelemy helpful. Also, sorry for the long post.
I am having the same problem with the engine light and PS501 Vehicle Speed Sensor code. I've been told I don't have any wiring attached to my RF wheel at all. I was informed I needed to replace the speed sensor harness and then attach a sensor.
I recently had rear brakes, the "half shell" (?), and both tyrods replaced. I have also replaced the Input/Output Sensors only to get this P0501 code error. My car is driving fine and the speedometer appears to be working ok. My transmission does not seem to be sluggish or out of order. I am also concerned as to why it is driving ok if I don't have this sensor to let my transmission know to shift. I am so confused.
I can't locate any information on how to replace the harness and what the wiring harness attaches to other than the RF wheel.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The speed sensor is located on the transmission. The anti-lock brake sensors are located on each wheel.

rocconi nailed it, the speed sensor is located on the transmission. Easy to change and if i remember right not to expensive. The sensors on the brake system are the abs sensors, if one of those were bad your abs light would be or the brakes would locking up.
GUYS ! the speedometer keeps working because that goes off the speed sensor in the back end of the tranny. Non-ABS hyundais still have 3-4 speed sensors depending on models. your 2001 elantra has an input and out put pair on the trans for shifting purposes, another one mounted on the rear of the trans above the dif housing and a 4th one in the right front wheel that controls some other shit. chances are, you installed a RF axle without a tone-ring. alot of aftermarket places dont realize that ALL non-abs XD elantras still have ONE ABS sensor in the RF wheel. check and see if the axle you installed has a tone ring and if not, go back and lie to the counter guy and tell him you have ABS and you need a Right front axle with a tone ring. this should clear up the 501 instantly if you didnt mess with the sensor thats probably welded itself into the knuckle by now, after all this is 2010 so the car is 9 years old now.
damn thats alot of sensors Glad my Accent has one lol
yeah, if its a stick it has one, just for the speedo cable. if it was an automatic you would have 3, all mounted on the trans. 2 of em are wires together and have to be replaced as a pair, there called "pulse generators" at least thats what we call em at the shop, 96-05 accents got em.
