Okay, today I finally was lucky enough to get into a race at the traffic lights.
Raced a lowly Suzuki Swift, 1991., probably 1.3 l engine, just like mine. And the driver obviously thinks it's a race car, just like me and my Excel.
The reason I'm posting this is - my car is 1 year older, and all I have is a CAI. Swift had lowered suspension, and probably his owner did some other mods as well. The car looked as the owner is maintaining it well.
Anyway, the race was from dead stop, which doesn't suit my car, I accelerate much better at higher gears. And since my vacuum pump is broken, I have throttle hesitation problem at higher rpm.
Swift was revving so hard I though his engine will blow up, but couldn't even begin to catch up. So I just purred my way to the next traffic light.
So, we have a 1990 Hyundai Excel vs 1991 Suzuki Swift. We know the winner, it was so easy, and now nobody can say Hyundai is bad.
Uhh, I like you, but I call BS on that... unless it was the 1.0 3 cyl swift. Reason being: I owned a 1993 swift for 3 years, then sold it to my ex's younger brother. We're currently modifying it, and with a simple tune up, exhaust (just a muffler) and some very minor engine tweaking, that car flies. Mind you it has the GT short ratio transmission installed (the stock one seized on me)
Needless to say that car is LIGHT AS ****, whereas an Excel (still lighter than a Pony) is much heavier.
the standard SOHC 1.3L makes 70 Hp, and a 1.5L MPFI Excel makes 81(or 83, depending on ECC and A/C options).
I dunno, either the guy couldn't drive or you have some kind of "hidden FI"

As a driver of an 1.3 accent x3, 1998, i must say that it's a complete nonsense that you could win against swift 1.3
Swift 1.3 Gti weights 750kg. Hyundai pony 1.3 weights 935kg.
Swift has 102 HP. Hyundai pony has 65Hp
Swift has Power-to-weight 134.67 bhp/ton. Pony has 70.33 bhp/ton
You could win only and ONLY if it was 1.0 swift and the driver isn't in a mood for a race. Swift 1.0 has 53 PS, but also wigths less then 800kg.

I'll third the BS call. Sorry Danny, but that just doesnt make any sense. I've driven other people's Swifts in the line of work, especially the old-school GTi's, and those little things are fast as all Hell get out. The reason; they're so bloody light they handle like go-karts and accelerate almost the same way with minor engine modifications. IF you strip them down, you're literally sitting on less than 670kg of metal, and a good portion of that is all ENGINE. Even the non-GTi's are fast, if anything, faster than an old Excel[Pony] can be without some serious, serious work.
So you're either running something suitably strange under the hood[which I don't see as yet] or you're just full of it. Actually DO the modifications that our members have recommended in your thread, and you'll still be hard-pressed to take on a modified Swift, let alone a modified GTi.

I think you guys underestimate the 1.3 worth of PURE POWA the SOHC small block hyundai brings to the roads. There is one thing everyone here seems to forget.. its a 91.. maybe he never changed the air filter, oil, spark plugs, or clutch? The excel will neva loossseee!!!! yeah
BTW Ill race you at "higher gears" in my elantra.

Feh, I'll race the lot of you in my Civic! IN a straight line!
[only to get decimated horribly......]

I had a 92 Excel GS with the 1.5L fuel infected motor. It was quick against mopeds but not much else. I had trouble against a jogger on a hill. I beat a Mustang GT off the line but come to find out he was making a left turn.
I'll call the 4th...5th...hell make it the final BS flag.
