well the shit kicker is i would have been 2nd in fsp but i'm pretty happy with where i'm ending up in street mod, I have a lot of fun racing with the guys in class. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves no matter where they end up.

What's keeping you out of FSP?

I heard there's going to be a FWD only SM class with weight restrictions based on displacement but I don't know much about it.

well to be legal I have to put a back seat back in it and put stock brakes back on it. everything else would be legal.

I can still push the limit of the rules a little more. I'm considering taking out the radio and speakers to drop a little more weight and i'm most likely going to put on a nice steering wheel to get rid of the airbag. I could drop some more weight if I changed out the stock passenger seat but the car has daily driven duties evey once in awhile so the stock one will probably stay.

On the off season I need to get a real suspension on the car. The ksports on both cars are toast. I need to invest in some konis and i'm going to try to get some ground control sleeves to fit with some stiffer front and rear springs. I might take off the front sway bar to get some more traction because I don't plan on running a phantom grip. Last but not least I want to get some 13x8s with some new v710s.

My goal is to get it down around 1950 lbs without me in it. I need to play with the alignment some more and if everything goes right i'll be competitive on a local level.

I don't think i'll ever be competitive with jinx jordan and tipple on the national level but I think I could place mid pack in fsp at nationals eventually. I'm going to see how things go next season. If the car does pretty well I might do a national event or 2.

One of the downfalls to hyundais is they aren't proven because nobody runs them. I'm going to be doing all the setup by trial and error. Plus this is only my second season autoxing so I need to improve my driving a good bit. Most of the nationally competitive guys have been driving their cars for years now. This is my first full season in the x3 so I have a ways to go with setup and driving skill.

I'll have tons of fun along the way though which is what really matters.

well I was back in action sunday with autocrossers incorporated. I have to say i'm in love with fedex field courses. If you have never been to one you should come out and try it.

this time around the course was a tricky one. Lots of fast offset turns with a few slow off camber 180s and lots of slaloms. The last slalom was the trickiest of all because it was decreasing length and came right after the fastest sweeper on course. most of the cones hit during the day were in this last section.

I had a pretty good day i ended up 6th out of 10 cars. My best time of the day was a 55.45 but my third run should have been my best but the timing system screwed me over and quit recording times a car before I ended. Oh well that is how the cookie crumbles. I had problems with the last slalom all day and ended most of my runs sideways through the timing lights. oversteer finally got the best of me my last run and I spun 5 ft from the finish lights. My last run was a rerun and I didn't have enough time to spray the tires down and this hurt me, it felt like the front tires were going to melt off the car and then I spun, go figure.

The car didn't do to bad. I ended up with hot pressures at 34/28 and was cooling the tires down every run. I still need to address some old/new problems. I need to tame the oversteer issues in transitions. I am rolling too much in the front and it causes the rear to come out instantly. Think "tank slapper" and you will have it right. I will have to work this out on the offseason with some stiffer springs and toe changes. The other issue is tire rubbing. I've been running small spacers in the rear but they aren't enough to keep the tires out of the longitudinal links. I also realized i'm rubbing up front as well on the inner frame. Time to run the bigger spacers out back and the smaller ones up front. I knew gimp gave those to me for a reason. here are some pics to show you what I mean.

this where the inside sidewalls are rubbing in the links notice the little bits of rubber still hanging

this is the rubbing in the front, look for the shiny spots, it is like that in front and behind the strut.

Other than that the car has taken a beating and asked for more. I am so glad that I took the turbo equipment off the car because it would have been a nightmare to maintain and on course I don't think I would be any faster. I get plenty of wheelspin now I can't imagine what another 40-50 hp would do.

Well tomorrow i'm back in dc with scca. Then i'm going to summit point monday to watch some friends do some road racing. Hope everyone has a nice labor day weekend, I know I will.

new update time

finally got a chance to look at my results from the aug 31st wdcr event

I had my best finish to date. I can't really take all the credit because some fast guys weren't there and others were in unfamiliar cars but I ended up in 4th out of 13 drivers in street mod. i ended up 126 out 202 in pax. It would have been nice to get that first trophy but I should be able to pull in quite a few next season. I was less than a tenth out of 3rd. The course was entirely different from the last few events. There were a few slaloms and quite a few wierd offsets. The optional slalom was screwing with a lot of people in the course walk but optional really didn't apply because one way was definately faster than the other way. The course was shorter than usual and was much tighter because of jersey walls put up for preseason football parking. I was lucky and got to work the course before I drove. I always have liked doing this because you have one of the best vantage points to see others mistakes or successes.

I started balls to the wall as usual to get a feel for the course. I screwed up a few sections by going in too fast and having to correct. 51.03. I thought in the first section I heard a banging noise come from underneath the car but it went away. I thought I might have broken a sway bar mount. One of the course workers brings me over a hockey puck shaped piece of metal and asks if I know what it might be. Turns out it was the passenger side engine mount vibration dampner, who cares I don't need it and its less weight for next run. next run I linked my sections better and used the smoother is faster mindset which still looks like me sliding a lot(oh well). 49.76. 4th run is pretty much the same. 49.79, don't know how I did that. Last run out was my best and definately felt the best in terms of smooth driving. I ended the day with a best time of 49.03. First place goes to brian karwan yet again with a blistering 44.95. The most impressive times of the day by far are from sam strano(multiple solo2 and prosolo champ) co-driving an f stock shelby gt mustang. I'm in awe of some of the guys I race with. They are unbelievably fast. In the wdcr region of the scca we pull from all over pa, md, dc and va and the caliber of drivers I race with is hard to match. We will see how many will trophy at nationals this month since we have quite a few competing.

Car worked so-so, it works pretty good on the tighter courses because of its size and weight and that it doesn't need much power on the small courses. I fixed the rubbing problem but now I realized why I didn't use the front spacers before, the tires hit the front bumper mount and pop the bumper cover off. i will have to modify the mount. No rubbing that I could see in the rear though which is nice.

I'm getting ansy again not racing for 2 weeks now. Thank goodness I have a race next sunday and the following sunday. I found out i'll be racing into november again which is pretty fun. Also I have football to watch again so that helps the time fly by till my next autox.

Me and skeird have some plans for the offseason so i'm hoping to have everything done by the spring. Then I can show everyone what the crooked H is really made of.

until next time

well after getting some serious rubber i am just giddy waiting for the 28th to come so i can go racing. the detroit region canceled again for the 27th and indiana was too far of a drive for saturday. i am hoping to have all my rubbing issues gone before then but i only have myself to blame for going with a 245-45-17 tire where a 215 was. by the way let me know where you are running at because next september i am relocating to aberdeen md and would love to go tear up some cones with another hyundai (there was one in toledo but he was bone stock)
i will keep everyone posted on time improvement with the new tread but i allready know that it is night and day from the old tire.

old tire general uhp (my buddy said i was spraying him with rubber when turning)
new tire falken rt615 (allready in love with them and i haven't even been to an event yet)

sounds good i'm always up for some more crooked h's out there competing. there are some very fast guys in stx in the dc region so you won't be hurting for competition.

I think i have most of the rubbing issues solved on mine. i'm waiting on my results from sunday to post an update. I think I did pretty good overall though.

Good news Andy, you won't have to change the brakes thanks to the new Fastrak.

Bad news, this means we should still be looking at the big hoosiers... like the 275/35/15's... I'll buy the sawzall if you'll buy the beer!

new update:

raced at cumberland on the 21st and had a great time as usual. It was a typical power course but had some slower sections so I was able to get closer than usual. I was the second fastest fwd car of the day with a dsp neon getting me by a few tenths. final results can be found here National Road Autosport website

The weather cooperated all day with mild temperatures and sunshine. I didn't have to cool the front tires till the 3rd run. I can't really explain my times, I just know that my quickest time must have been a hero run because I couldn't get within a half second of it after I ran it. The course was the typical T that they have been running for the last couple of years with slower sections with slaloms and two 180 turnarounds with a fast kink in the middle of course where I was having to upshift to third(50+mph). In the slower 180 I was downshifting into first to get a better dig out of the turn. I was taking the kink with a slight lift but no braking. Its a ballsy turn in any car, I worked my heat right at this turn and witnessed quite a few cars spin at 60+ mph.

I did make some minor changes to the car and they seemed to help. I didn't think I was still able to adjust the shocks in the rear but they did adjust and I softened them a bunch. This made the car's transitions a little less oversteer happy. Tire pressures ended up 33/30 f/r hot. The car is still taking a beating and loving it. I clearanced the left front fender a bit to be able to run the big(7mm) spacers up front but i'm still getting some rubbing in the rear with the small(3mm) spacers in the rear. Its not a big deal, the tires just polish the link a bit.

here were my times for the day:
58.046
55.743
55.830
54.678
53.980-my hero run where everything went right
54.487+1

I was pretty happy with my times. i ended up 40th out of 73 and 41st on pax. I was within 3 seconds of the top guys in street mod normally i'm 7-8 seconds off the top guys.

i've made arrangements to drive a certain bmw at the pumpkin carve while he drives the accent. hopefully he will still have a clutch at the end of the day

next up will be results from my the wdcr final race(hint, it wasn't a good day for weather or driving)
