I think you should ask her to pay up or tell her to move out because if she doesn't pay, you both wont have a place to stay or something like that. She might be the type that just freeloads as much as possible until you explain to her that there's no free rides in life. She will either pay you or look for another free ride. Hope everything works out and this was just her forgetting.

i hope it was just her forgetting too...
i know like the first month we really didn't care, but last month she was 100 short, and now she hasn't paid yet..

and we agreed$150 a paycheck... We haven't even gotten that - and now she is leaving for Alberta on Wednesday, and wont be back until the 21st... and I leave the 21st for Mexico...

I hope she leaves money for us... =|

it is just though because shes my best friend and i dont wanna loose the frienship

When it comes to money, be upfront.

The longer she lives there without paying, the harder it'll be to get her to understand that she OWES it, not just that it'd be nice of her to pay it.

Setting (and enforcing) rules should be simple if she really is your friend. If she told you she'd pay, then lives off you for free, that's not a friend. It might be different if she never agreed to pay, but what kinda friends don't keep their word at their friends (your) expense?

Well...

I'm new homeowner, and I'm also in a situation where I have roommates. Not because I need the money, but mainly because living in a house alone is kinda lame, ya know? I don't need to stress about it because I made up a roommate contract. That way, you and your landlord can make arrangements where you only pay YOUR portion of the rent, and your roommate is responsible for her own. Maybe you should look online and check it out and see how lenient your landlord is.

Especailly with friends, it's a little turbulent when it comes down to money, but if you're pussy-footing around, the problem doesn't resolve itself, nor will it ever resolve itself. Approach it, but in a non-confrontive way. Be straight but don't point fingers.

Kinda vague, but it's an artform

Howie~

i try and say things in passing with my roommate, like as i walk out the door, "oh hey, when are you going to pay your part of rent?" or "hey i'm heading out but just go ahead and write me a check for rent and put it on the fridge" something like that. and if that doesn't work, try telling her honestly, "hey I can't afford to pay your portion of rent, I don't want to have to but I might need to get a different roommate who can pay for it..."

just some ideas

I like, and agree with, this idea.

Hey drtygurl,

I kinda kno where your coming from...I had to pay our last months rent cuz my roommate lost his job and than he makes messes and eats my food! Sometimes you gotta be up front, if shes truly your best friend she will understand where your coming from and wont be to mad! I just got fed up with my roommate so hes gone next month when our lease is up! But I would say to her..."hey I know your gonna be gone for awhile so would it be possible for me to get that rent money early?" that way your not being to bitchy but your making your point that you have no intention of picking up her slack and paying her half! And if that doesnt work...curb stomp her!! LOL!! No Im just kidding!
