Default Tib V6 quality and reliability

Hi, I'm new to this forum and could use some advice. I was considering buying other cars such as an RX8 or an Eclipse. But I test drove both a 2003 & 2004 manual Tiburon V6 and liked them...enough so that I would consider buying one. I drove a '81 RX7 with a ground effects kit for 18 years (2 engines and about 180K miles).

My main concern at this point is reliability. Earlier model Hyundais didn't have a good reputation, but I understand Hyundai has improved quality quite a bit. What's the general consensus on 2003 & 2004 Tiburons and what's the highest mileage anyone has heard of on a Tiburon still running?

Also, how about the after market body kits...do any dealers offer them or is that strictly up to the buyer?

Thanks for any input.

First off welcome

As for kits, Email ITALIATIB one of the GK mods he can get the deals on kits for the tib.

Reliable, yeah clutch is an issue that the V-6 6 spd has, mine has been in the shop more than on the road cause of that issue it seems.

If you are for more show than go, this car stock will last you quite a while. While the clutch does stink and may very well go out in the first 10K miles, that is probably the first thing I would have updated had I known beforehand.

If you like your fair share of speed as well, there are plenty of upgrades. The Tib takes very well to N/A modding. There are a few kits for superchargers (200whp-300whp+) in development as we speak. It is not cheap though, as I am sure you know, since rotary upgrades are expensive too.

As far as tibs I have heard lasting a while, I have seen 1st gen tibs ('97) on the road with 150,000 miles on them. It all depends on how well you upkeep the car, provided you didn't get a lemon. I also have seen or heard VERY few people complaining about their tibs reliability. Sure they complain about a few parts not being as good as they want, but it IS a $20,000 car.

I really appreciate the replies so far. When I test drove it twice, I noticed the clutch was pretty loose on both cars. What kind of non-racing clutch would you recommend to replace it with? If anyone has a link, that would be great.

Are there any Tiburon clubs out here in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Like spike said, Email Italia2k3tib he can probably get you a deal on a kit. Well when it comes to quality and reliability it is all different from each person. I have 23k miles on it and no problems with clutch or anything else, I haven't had to take it in to the shop at all..If your gonna get a new clutch might as well get a good one. I heard that centerforce has a pretty good one, but others can let you know about that. Here's a link to some pictures of bodykits that are available and some that aren't available or never will...But there are quite a few kits..:bandit:

Dear "Dan" I'm 48 years old bought a red 2003 Tiburon V6 6spd. and love it! Since I own a 1963 S/W/C Corvette and a 1973 Z/28 Camaro my selection on this a foreign sports car was for a good reason. My research showed that for the dollar, it was very tough to beat the Tiburon. I don't know what you paid for yours....I paid $15,800. for mine brand new!! You would have to spend another 12 grand to beat the performance
that this car offers (new) Sure, a ZO6 Corvette, Porche Boxster, Nissan 350Z etc. offer more High performance...BUT....look at the $$$price$$$ of admmision!
As far as reliability...c'mon ....10 year 100,000. miles you can't beat it with a stick. I don't care what any young buck says about reliability. you mess with ANY engine weather it's my smallblock Chevy or your Tiburon V6 all bets are off! Still I believe Supercharging is the way to go with this motor as long as you keep the boost at a reasonable level.
