Default Radio install

Today I decided to put the radio from my other car into the Tib.

I finished ripping it out of the Vette, packed the Tibs trunk and went to my parents house to work on it (no nosey neighbors to spy on what could be stolen (like at my apt complex), plus they got tools there)

Eariler this week I had purchased the wiring adapter and the dash install kit. The dash kit was for a 2002 and older model Tib, but the guy said it would fit just fine in the 2003.

The trim around the front console came off easily. I was supprised to see no screws held any of it in place...but it made it kind of nice and easy to install.

I got the old radio out, and put my other one in. I had put in a Kenwood KDC-MPV622 MP3 CD head unit. It's like a year or so old, the one with the 65 color changing face.

After crimping all the wires to the adapter, and plugging the adapter into the stock harness I powered it up.

What I heard blew me away. It had to have been 10x better than the stock stereo... USING THE STOCK SPEAKERS!

I was all set to strip the 6x9's, sub, cap, amps, etc out of the Vette...but after hearing what the stock speakers and sub sounded like in the Tib, I was amazed and gave it no second thoughts of adding all my other equipment in.

I mounted the radio in the dash and put the dash back together.

I cruised around tonight down town and had the stereo cranked up with all styles of music blaring and I was thoroughly impressed at the stock amp and speaker system Hyundai had installed in the Tiburon. The stock head unit sucked, but I am loving the rest of it after I got my old head unit installed.

Those of you who are wanting better sound, I would HIGHLY recommend getting one of those nice 45-50+ watt x 4 head units with some bass adjustments built in. You will be AMAZED what a difference it makes.

The whole install took less than 20mins.
Tools used:
philips screwdriver (big head for radio mount bolts)
wire crimper/stripper
wire connectors/crimps (15 of the smaller blue size should do)
dash install kit ($20 @ best buy)
wiring harness ($15 @ best buy)

Since my head unit has silver trim, I am thinking of just getting the aluminum trim knobs, ac trim and gauge trim now to match it.

The modding has begun!
Pics coming soon.

Well after driving around all weekend, I found out the CD player doesnt work anymore. So I unplugged the harness to take it back to Best Buy for the warranty replacement and they needed the wiring harness...so i clipped all the wires adn i guess one touched the ground and the clock went out. I should have been more careful, but I was in a hurry because I was doing this in the Best Buy parking lot. (i wanted them to verify it didn't work in my car in case it suddenly started working on their work bench)

No big deal I thought. Probably just a fuse.

I get home and put the stock radio back in and it doesnt work now either.

I checked ALL the fuses in the dash panel under the steering wheel and all were good.

I am assuming the amp's fuse is blown perhaps?

Where is the stock amp located at?

woo hoo fixed it.
I re-checked all my dash fuses... and even popped that little one out of the yellow holder thing... that was the culprit. I replaced it and I am back in business.

After listening to the stock radio again, I have almost decided to campaign hard to make sure everyone gets an aftermarket head unit so that they can fully enjoy their stock infinity system without having to buy amps and subs and more speakers.

Hopefully I will have my HU back in a week (or so Best Buy said, although i HIGHLY doubt that will happen)

The stock system is definitely improved with a new headunit, but, the stock speakers and sub are nothing compared to a nice aftermarket setup. IMO, if you have the amp, sub, speakers, ect, then put them in. Youll be blown away even more

In preparation for installing a new head unit in my car, I wanted to see how good the stock speakers were in the "Infinity" system. I was shocked to find the rear 6x9's were thin paper cones and not even 2-ways!! Even my stock RD Tiburon had 2-way 6x9's (in the "upgrade" CD stereo package).

Because of that, I replaced those and the tweeters with Infinity Kappas. Big difference! The system no longer sounds muddy, even using the stock head unit. Excellent sound separation and clarity with stuff like cymbal crashes. Can't wait to see what an aftermarket head unit gives me now!

I know the stock sub w/ stock head unit doesn't give off much bass... Is there a way to change that without adding an amp? I've got an amp and a Polk audio 12" sub in a box from my old car... But in AZ its just tooo hot this time of year to be fiddeling around w/ wireing. ...That and I'm too stubborn to pay for someone else to do it...

There's a wire-swap you can do for the stock subwoofer since Hyundai wired it out of phase... the bass sounds better since it'll actually be firing WITH the other speakers...
