Default B&M Short Shifter Install 6 Spd

I got my Short Shifter from B&M yesterday and am loving it. I have a 2004 Tiburon Tuscani, 6 Speed. There were a few problems I had with installing it so I thought I would share them.

The install goes great until you hit Step 7, which says to remove the clamps for the shifter cables. This seemed impossible to me. So instead of removing the shifter assembly from the car I decided to remove the console surrounding the shifter, which is easy. With the console removed you can easily do the required install.

The second problem I came across was the shifter plate gap is too small. This looks like a Hyundai screw up. On the OEM shifter they had to grind each side of the shifter in order for the shifter plate to fit on. So, I had to grind the shifter plate gap a couple mm on each side in order for it to fit on the B&M Shifter.

Another minor problem was the pivot ball. You have to remove the pivot ball from the old shifter and install it on the new shifter. This is easier said then done because it is a very tight fit. My solution to make this easily is to warm the plastic pivot ball before trying to remove and re-install. This makes the plastic softer. Of course I was working in retarded Canadian weather and it was just below freezing so this problem is probably not that serious. Everything after that was childs play.

For the results. The B&M shifter is wicked. You need to apply a bit more force when shifting which is a good thing for me cause I like shifter fast and hard. The feel is so much nicer. You can actually feel when you hit the gear and having a shorter throw is pretty nice.

The shifter looks pretty nice but the factory knob looks horrible on it. I think all of us that have the 6 Speeds are disappointed with the available shift knobs. Or maybe I haven't found a good company to buy them yet. I'm want a Billet shift knob, similar to the Razo. So, I'm going to try to design an adapter to allow the 6-Speed Reverse mechanism to work with any universal Shift Knob. Let me know if you be interested in this for your car. I'll give an update once I have a prototype.

If you have any questions about the Short Shifter please email me, I'd be glad to help.

Aaron
