Hey Doc
I guess I will take the plung and ask the first question! I would start by saying that I have a little bit of a bad back from lifting things when I was younger. But at times I get very bad pains in my neck. What is the best thing that I could do for them.

One of the most important things you can do is to always be conscious of your posture. Sitting and standing up straight as you can (remember what Dr. Mom always said, Sit up your slouching!! Well, that was very good advice)! Poor posture lead's to disc's wearing out and arthritis starting at an earlier age. The "Golden Years" end up being full of pain and discomfort. If you were in a car accident, had a bad fall, wear a back pack, read alot of books, work on the computer most likely you have poor posture. 80% of society have poor posture!
Helpful tips!
Neck:
1. when your neck starts aching remember what you were doing when the pain started that way you can avoid the type of activities that may trigger it.
2. In the morning or when discomfort starts: look up toward ceiling as far as neck will go, Turn you head to the left and then right, try to touch your ear to each shoulder without lifting the shoulder up to the ear. Hold each motion for 10 seconds then relax. If you have pain at any point don't go any further and let me know!
3. At home roll up a towel to have a diameter of about 4 inches and lye on the floor with it behind your neck below your head. This helps get pressure off disc's and relax neck muscles.
The exercises for the neck and low back may make you a little sore, that's normal!
Low back:
1: Same as above
2: In the morning or when discomfort starts. Lie on back pull knee's up to chest several times and hold 5 seconds each time. Pull right knee up and over toward left shoulder and vise versa hold 5 seconds each time.
Lying on back with knee's bent push small of back into the floor to flaten low back curve do several times hold 5 seconds each time. Same position, stomach crunches with hands across chest not behind neck. Don't tilt neck forward keep it back and only lift shoulders off ground 4-5 inches. You don't need to touch your knee's with elbows either (like the high school Phy. Ed. teachers says). A stronger stomach = a stronger back!
3: When sitting or driving put that same roll you made with the towel for your neck behind your low back, right above gluteal region. If it seems to big make it smaller. At work take a break from sitting every 30 minutes or so.
Go see a chiropractor in your area! If you don't know of any ask a freind and they probably can recommend one or several.
This should help!

Thanks DOC. Yeah I wear a back pack and have been in a major accident where my car was totaled. I do know a Chiropractor so he will be one of the first people I head over and see.
Thanks again!

However this pertained only to US chiropractors. Apparently there are two types of chiropractic certification in the US. One is basically a real doctor, and one is nothing like a real doctor.
In Canada, all Chiropractors are real doctors (if they have certification), and my family doctor commends their work in many situations.
Doc, can you clarify the situation with the two different types in the US?
Everyday I hear a similar story. It is true there are good chiropractors and bad ones! The same goes for medical doctors, nurses, and even mechanics... Chiropractors and medical doctors are required by law to carry malpractice insurance. Chiropractors malpractice is next to nothing compared with MD's malpractice. That is due to how safe and effective chiropractic is. Chiropractic isn't for everyone, but what is? There are those horror stories out there, but bad news travels fast and that is what the media in the US likes to focus on. How often do you hear a positive story on the news? Not too often! I can understand the unfamiliarity of going to a chiropractor. If you go to a mechanic and you don't like his or her work you simply go and find another mechanic or go to one that a freind has recommended(That's what I would recommend when it comes to just about anything).
Jonus666 here in the States there are better schools than other ones and that holds true for just about every profession! My school consisted of 40% Canadian. The education was at and above most medical schools. For example, I have more training in OB/GYN than most gynecologists do. I'm not even a gynecologist, nor do I want to be! The only area lacking in any chiropractic school is in pharmaceutical drugs, since we don't prescribe drugs.
One thing to remember there is good and bad in anything! Hope this helps.
