Default Dead leg

I've had this a lot of times, and us guys who play soccer always knew if you get kicked in the wrong spot on your shin muscle it's useless to "walk it off", you can just leave the game right away because you won't walk for a month.

So, I had it again not so long ago, and I'd like to know what's this dead leg issue all about. You don't even have to get hit hard, but if it's on the wrong spot, your entire leg below the knee hurts so bad and won't stop for days or weeks.

Nerve maybe? Blood vessel?
