My question is a 2 parter
1) Can you swap in a 4G63t into the Excel or just the 4G63
2) Is the 4G63t solely for AWD applications or can it be run in a FWD configuration?
Thanks

Re: Question regarding 4G63 engine swap on 92 Excel
1) whichever you'd like - same block, same mounting. And for that matter, basically any 4Gxx DOHC from that era will swap in the same.
2) 4G63t was also in Eclipse GS-T, which was a fwd only model. T/E/L had both fwd & awd turbo versions. You can score a GSX/TSI awd for a donor and use a fwd tranny. Or, if you're sick & twisted, handy at fabricating stuff and/or are hell bent on having something ludirously fast, you can take the rest of the GSX hardware and do this:

Thanks for the input, answered a few of my questions.
As a side note, has anyone done a AWD conversion to a Excel? I'm just toying with the idea right. Owning a Suby Impreza has made me really appreciate AWD. Any tips, warnings, experience with something like this?

Re: Question regarding 4G63 engine swap on 92 Excel
Look again at that link - that's what I was hinting at.
That guy is putting the DSM AWD components onto his Colt. The 88-92 Colt/Mirage/Summit hatchback shares the same chassis as the Excel. It has a different rear suspension w/solid beam axle & struts, and a 12v head on their 4G15, but aside from that and the body, its essentially the same. For all intent & purpose, the X2 is a DSM. Everything he is doing applies to the Excel - same sh!t.
The whole 4G63t swap originated in the C/M/S circle and has slowly been making its way into the Hyundai world.
Re: Question regarding 4G63 engine swap on 92 Excel
Pucci, are you sure the 88-92 C/M/S had a 12v head? My buddy has a 90 Colt, and it's got an 8-valve head, same as my other friend's 92 Excel. Was the 12-valve head a U.S. thing? I know the newer Colts (93-whenever) had a 12-valve head, (the engine I believe Hyundai based the SOHC Alpha on), but I didn't think the older ones did.
That link is cool... my buddy with the Colt was contemplating doing that until the realization of the sheer amount of work and cost involved hit him.
Re: Question regarding 4G63 engine swap on 92 Excel
Question.....Is there more to a 4g63/4g63t motor swap into a 93 Excel then just bolting it up to the tranny? Or do I have to do some modding to get it to bolt up to the tranny? Or do I even need to get a whole new tranny?
Re: Question regarding 4G63 engine swap on 92 Excel
At some point the early ones switched to 12v. Maybe 89-90ish. After reading alot of posts at 4G61, it seems as though it was hit or miss for that time period - some had 8v, some had 12v.
Yeah that dude is doing some awesome work - something I thought about as soon as I learned of the DSM compatability of the X2. In all actuallity, there is not alot of serious fabrication going on. New cross member & some brackets, a little cutting and grinding, some precise measuring. I think the biggest problem(for me) would be having access to good work space like that and neccessary equipment(lifts mainly).
I'm considering seeking out a GSX specifically for my engine donor to mate to a fwd tranny initially, with the intention on holding onto the rest of the AWD hardware for a possible future project.
Re: Question regarding 4G63 engine swap on 92 Excel
From what I've heard/seen, the Colt/Excel 4g63 swap is as simple if not more so than the Accent Beta swap.
I'd love to see a 4g63t Colt in person... just to see how fast that sucker would go. 8D
