Default Just making sure i have it down - Swapping a 2000 2.0beta into a 1997 1.8Beta

I'm a long time dsm'er and these pesky hyundais are very new to me. I picked up a 1997 GSL elantra in great shape but with a blown headgasket. I have access to a 2000 Elantra w/a 2.0L motor, tranny, ecu...well pretty much whatever i want. I however have to have what i want pulled from the car by this weekend. Through some research and assistance from a hyundai guy i've learned the following

I have a beta1.8 in my 97 and a beta2.0 in the 2000
The 97 is referred to as j2

--The motors are a direct swap and the harnesses should be the same but the fuel maps on the ECUs are different so you will need a motor and ECU out of the 2000

--The only differences between the 1.8 and the 2.0 the engine internals, the crankshaft and rods and the heads.

--The 1.8 and 2.0 trannies will 'throw' the same (distance the shifter has to travel between shifts) but the 1.8 tranny has a shorter gearing for better acceleration and less top end.

So in summary i can pull the motor, trans and ecu out of the 2000 and bolt them into the chassis w/ no major fabrication issues. Does this seem correct? Should i be aware of any sensors from the 1.8 that i need to keep to work with the 2.0 or vise versa?? Thank you all very much for you help and resources.

if you pull the entire engine, tranny, ecu, and wiring harness it will be a direct bolt-up affair.

the 1.8 tranny has the same 1-2-3 gear ratios and the same final drive ratio however 4th gear is a little closer and so is 5th. i run the 1.8 tranny on my 1.6 accent and really like it. the throws are all the same.

hey if it would be possible let me know if you can ship me the shifter linkage cable set that runs from the shifter to the transmission fork linkage. i need one and cant afford dealer cost of lik $170... if you can help then please email me at beppomarx@hotmail.com.

also i dont think DSM's suffer this but i have never worked on one... when removing the tranny from the engine you will need to remove the slave cylinder and unscrew the nut from the rod that pulls teh release bearing. this way it can rotate out and let go of the release bearing- sometimes you need to remove the plastic bushing as well depending on how stubborn it is.

if you have any questions just email me.

The deal may be falling through. I will know more tonight. I'm thinking its going to be just easier to pull 1 motor out of my 97, head to a junk yard locally here and get another 1.8. Same sensors, ecu, no funny wiring....just easier. The motor will only run me 125 for the full long block and i think they will warranty it for a short period of time. The oil pump inner rotor cracked on my eclipse so the elantra is much cheaper of the two to fix at this point
