OK, So I have been contemplating whether or not to use the 1.8L transmission on the 1.6L. I have a friend that can do the swap for me and he says it's a direct swap. I already have a stock clutch for the 1.8L transmission. The main thing i'm concerned about is the 1.6L manual transmission breaking on me. I want to know IF you guys think i should just swap transmissions now OR buy a spec stage 3 clutch. I'm going to have 200whp out of the 1.6L engine running about 16 psi of boost on a standalone (microtech) with a t4 turbo and srt-4 injectors. Any opinions and suggestions are welcome. I have seen some beta-swaps with the stock alpha tranny and spec stage 3 clutch, but it just couldn't hold the power.....also if i get the internals for cheap i'll beta swap with the 1.8L. let me know what to do now, before i waste anymore money.... thank you
200whp from the 1.6... thats a fair whak! will the 1.6 even handle it? and a t4 on the 1.6... wont you get a ****E load of lag I meen a ****E load!
I think the t4 is waaaayy to big for a 1.6 but then im not an expert or anything. if your going to be doing the gearbox u may as well do the motor at the same time. I know it is a lot more work but I think it would be worth it if it were me and it will be id go with the 1.8 beta, t3 and a decompression plate. I knew someone with this setup and was running low 13s, I dont know what pwr output was though.
also if your hell bent on the t4 you could mabey try somthing like a t3/t4
(t3 exaugst turbine t4 compessor)

well, i want to inform you that the t3/t4 is just the turbo housing itself. The actual turbo is a T25 which is able to hold 350HP. I was told the 1.6L engine can hold up to 225whp properly tuned with internals. I'm trying to get around 200-225 whp that is with internals, port and polished intake manifold with BBTB, good turbo manifold, and a whole other good stuff. Remember this is a daily driver. so i want it to be reliable. should i swap the 1.8L tranny or swap them both??? let me know please
If your swapping in the 1.8beta trany. You could with a little more work swap in a beta motor too. I was in your same position last fall. I was planning to turbo the 1.5 in my LC. I was going to find some scoupe turbo internals. My goal was to get around 200whp. Which would have required at least 18psi of boost probably.
Eventually I realized that in the long run it would be cheaper, more reliable and more powerfull to do the beta swap then turbo it. Let me explain. The beta swap is relatively cheap. A decent motor can be had for a few hundred dollars and will probably be cheaper than getting internals made for your 1.6 and then getting them installed. It will probablly be more reliable. You only need 7-8psi of boost to get 200whp on a beta. Thats low boost! You might not need a standalone for this. (Although it would be good to have and pretty cool.) Running low boost is usually easier and more reliable. Ultimately the beta will have more potential. Lots of people have run 280whp on stock betas. Plus its easier to find parts for (turbo manifold). Plus your car will be more powerfull when not in your boost range.
Ultimately, whatever route you choose. I say if you can eaisly get and use a beta tranny, I say do it if you can. The alpha trannys really blow. (literally and figuratively). Good luck.

also why are you asking about the 1.8 transmission? the xd transmission has the long gearing you want for the turbo and also its easier to find a low mileage xd tranny. the one i just put in my car had 6k on it! for $250!

OH, ok I allways thaught it was t3/t4 compressor wheels aswell because, isnt the t4,s phisical size ALOT bigger than the t25? and then why would you change just the housing? but yes a t25 or t28 is somthing i would be looking to put on a 1.6.
I still say your better of turboing a beta, its a good strong base to begin with and something can only ever be as strong as its weekest point
if u have been told the 1.6 can take 225 whp and ur goal is 200, thats cutting it fairly close dont you think. especialy as a daily driver.

Stock 2.0 4G63 engines in the Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talons come stock with the T25 turbine, but in a TD05 housing, which from what I remember is smaller to the T3 housign *if not the same* and it's only good up to... nothing? Why buy a turbo in a bigger housing? It's only going to give you more room for Turbo wear and taer.
If you want big bang for the buck and decently quick spool... Try picking up a Big 16g Evo3 turbo. They're in the same TD05H housings as the T25, 14G, and small 16G's but they can spool up to 24+ psi efficiently, and are perfect for your goal.

it is actually a turbo from a silvia.... i can't explain the turbo. it looks good though. I do want to complete a full beta swap, but i thought the 1.8 tranny has long gearing too? is the 1.8 tranny at least stronger than the 1.6??? let me know, thank you
What im going to do is...... Finish turbo'ing the 1.6L with the 1.8L tranny and a heavy duty pressure plate, street disc combo from fasthyundai.com (the hyundaiperformace store) It will definitely hold the boost i throw at the 1.6L, but as of right now i have this really annoying (gay) ticking noise. It sounds like one of the lifters. It comes from the top of the engine, i have always noticed this noise since i first bought the engine, but it was really queit ever since i bought the car. NOW it is LOUDER than ever and really noticeable. does anybody know what this is??? Before i turbo anything i would like to fix this problem. Also my oil pan is a little bent from holding it up with a jack and a cloth while do the auto-manual swap. Could this have caused any problems?????
