Hyundai is looking to fill a gap in its lineup by introducing a new sub-compact crossover in the near future.

A mini Hyundai crossover has been spied testing before, but spy photographers managed to get a look at the upcoming vehicle’s interior for the first time. Although much of the dashboard is covered by plastic and mesh sheeting, we can see a layout that is a bit of a departure from the design Hyundai currently uses. An interesting touch is the houndstooth-patterned front seat, which is a design cue we’re sure won’t make it to production models.

The crossover will share a platform with the i20/i30 subcompact that is sold in Europe and parts of Asia. Hyundai’s smallest crossover is currently the Tucson, so this new one will slot below the Tucson in price and size. Like the other vehicles it competes with, it should be offered standard with front-wheel drive and AWD as optional.

When this new, yet-to-be-named mini Hyundai crossover comes out later this year, it will compete with the Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3 and Chevrolet Trax.
