The Hyundai Veloster has been celebrated for its quirky looks, but hindered by its lack of performance. To stave off the stigma, we were introduced to the Hyundai Veloster Turbo at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, and now Hyundai CEO John Krafcik has leaked that the turbo package will cost a mere $1,600 more than the base MSRP of the Veloster.

The official announcement is expected in the coming week, but based on this statement, the car should just come in under the $20,000 mark, a major psychological barrier for buyers. The base MSRP on the regular Veloster is $18,075, including a $775 destination charge.

A 201 hp turbocharged 1.6-liter direct injection four-cylinder engine will power the Veloster Turbo. That nets a 63 hp boost over the base model. The turbo kit will bring the car in at 2,800 lbs, a few hundred pounds more, but still relatively light.

The Turbo will offer standard leather seats and BlueLink communications setup, with an additional ‘ultimate’ package which gets you a panoramic glass roof.

A matte gray paint job will be specially outfitted on the Veloster Turbo, and will be the only car in Hyundai’s lineup that will offer the color.
