Default NHTSA Mandates Tire Pressure Monitors for all passenger vehicles.

Just thought everyone would like to know that we have a new saftey feature that will be in all cars soon.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NHTSA Mandates Tire Pressure Monitors by 2008

According to a new motor vehicle safety standard issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), all passenger vehicles manufactured for the U.S. will be required to have tire pressure monitors as standard equipment by model year 2008, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) reported.

According to ASA, the regulation requires that manufacturers install a system that can detect when one or more of a vehicle's tires are 25 percent or more below the recommended inflation pressure.

The manufacturer's average cost per vehicle is estimated between $48.44 and $69.89, according to NHTSA.

NHTSA originally published a regulation in December 2001 that would have required vehicles made after November 2003 to have dashboard lights warning drivers about low tire pressure. A federal appeals court ruled against that NHTSA regulation in August 2003, leading to the current rule.

Did you know that 35% of the cost of a new car is due to gov't mandated safety and emissions equipment?

F*CK NHTSA!!!

wow..that is pretty crazy...:??: On the other hand, like the article stated...the cost would only be about 50-70 bux extra a car. I guess that isn't too bad...but when you add up all the mandated saftey and emissons equipment, it can get kind of pricey.

I am afraid that this may make it illegal to switch wheels and tires on a car equipped with this equipment. Or if you do maybe you will get a trouble light from doing so. like if you take out your airbags. Or insurance won't cover you if you roll your vehicle, etc.

I at least hope they decide on some sort of standard that is universal.

...and this is why cars keep getting heavier, even though they're now made of plastic instead of cast iron.

you can still switch the wheels, but it will cost you. Currently cars with these systems use either a band with a sensor wraped around the wheel -think big ass hose clamp around the inside of the wheel- or a tire pressure sender in the valve stem. Regardless if you want to keep it when switching wheels it would be about 250-300 dollars a valve stem for that system. The bands can just be switched. Of course with time, and being mandated the cost will eventually go down.

Yet another result of the prevailing stupidity in this country:zzz:
