Default Hyundai eyes luxury cars, hybrids

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co. said Monday it may produce rear-wheel-drive luxury cars around 2007 to emulate the success of BMW's premium cars and Toyota's Lexus.

The auto manufacturer also plans to churn out hybrid cars later in 2006.

The moves by the country's top auto manufacturer, which controls half the home market, is seen as a step towards its goal of being among the world's top five car producers by 2010.

"We have not decided in what brand the luxury model will be, but rear-drive cars like BMW and Toyota's Lexus will be launched around 2007," a Hyundai spokesman said by telephone.

It currently produces only front-wheel-drive cars.

Hyundai and affiliate Kia Motors Corp. will also bring forward by a year, to end-2006, plans to sell small-size hybrid cars to the United States, the spokesman said.

The first hybrid models will be subcompact cars of Hyundai's Accent and Kia's Rio, which share production platforms.

Hyundai would not produce large-size hybrid vehicles for a while because of their low profitability, the spokesman added.

Like many South Korean exporters, Hyundai is having to cope with a stronger won currency and higher steel prices, as well as a sluggish local economy. Its first-quarter operating profits tumbled by almost one third.

Interesting news. Seems like a hybrid Accent (in the yet to be unveiled 3 door) would be perfect, and a good car to market against other hybrids.

Also, it was only a matter of time before they got serious about their "luxury" cars.

I just wish they would release the Accent with the diesel engine in the US until they actually release the hybrid...

I am glad they are expanding the line up, but Hybrid technology does not excite me. It isn't the wave of the future and it won't make or break an auto maker. Hopefully if they are going to do it though, they will make a much more affordable Hybrid then what is currently available.

I agree with what you are saying. Hyundai has been developing (or co-developing) various Fuel Cell technology for the last couple years. I feel that will be the wave of the future, I hope they can be the first or one of the first automakers do capitalize on that.

I've seen hybrid car's like the prius and the hybrid EP3 civic with "clean special Fuel" License plate's,

What's special about electricity and gasoline??

only car's that Run on CNG Or hydrogen or even used fish fry oil is more suited to those license plates.

And Boy Do i hate The prius..Fugly car..Crappy handling..toyota quality bullshit,
Styling resembles a piece curd that never made it into a cheese,
