Default Hyundai Sonata sales surge

Hyundai Sonata sales surge

Hyundai is enjoying record-setting sales of the Sonata sedan it builds at its plant in Montgomery. It also has seen employment top 2,500 workers, 500 more than expected.

In November, Hyundai sold 14,216 Sonatas in the United States, 117 percent more than the 6,557 it sold in November 2004. Unlike a year ago, all vehicles sold this year were built by Alabama workers at the Montgomery plant.

Hyundai is probably hoping for a similar sales spike when it makes Santa Fe sport utility vehicles in Montgomery in 2006. Sales of the Santa Fe were down to 3,423 in November compared to 7,620 the same month a year ago.

The revamped Santa Fe to be built in Alabama will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Hyundai had expected to hire 2,000 workers to produce vehicles at the plant, which is one of the most modern in the world and heavily automated. Michael Tomberlin --
