Default What is with cars with one huge ugly windshield wiper? Anyone know?

I keep seeing cars with one huge wierd looking windshield wiper? Is this aftermarket? I saw an Accent with a center wiper. I think it looks stupid. Why does it sit on the wind shield? is it supposed to look cool? Just curious.
