I was wondering what the normal cost was for a gallon of white auto paint? I realize that all paints are different in cost, but what would be considered normal price for white paint and what would be considered high cost for paint (ie; House of Kolor)

Depends on the supplier, the shop, and the type of paint you get. You could buy a gallon of white paint for $40 and then again, you could buy a gallon of white paint for $1600. Just depends on where you get it, what kind it is, and how generous the supplier is. :

well I got my car painted, just had it resprayed factory Alpine White... and the guy who painted it said it was $178 for a gallon of paint. It seemed a little high but I guess that's what I get for a Hyundai. Does $178/gallon seem a little off to you?

To me, 178/gallon is really really high. But see, that's only because I get super big discounts on paint from my supplier since I'm ordering paint all the time for customer vehicles in my shop.
What kind of paint did they use? I'm assuming it's probably PPG since that's what alot of shops tend to use. It doesn't matter that your car is a Hyundai. What matters in paint pricing, is the type of paint you're getting, the manufacturer of it (PPG, Dupont, House Of Kolor, etc...), and the supplier. To be honest, if it was just regular nothing special factory Alpine White that you were getting, in either Dupont or PPG, I would expect someone (without hook ups) to pay around $100 to $ 130 per gallon. Anything else, and the shop or supplier is making extra cash off of you.

I think the pricing goes for what type of finish it is, regardless of the brand name. I use eurethane based paints on all cars/trucks I redo. This tends to be more expensive, but the quality is there to back up the finish.
