Default fiberglass hood?

this might be a dumb question but has anyone ever thought of fiberglassing a hood for their car. i know some of you would say just buy one and safe yourself the trouble but i have a 96 4door x3 and so far i havent found anything. i was just wondering how one would go about doing this. i was thinking of using molding foam and fiberglassing right onto that, what do you guys think.

thanks

would there be an engineering drama?
i have thought of it from time to time, so i could mould a drift bonnet vent or something like that into one.

honestly have no idea.

I came really close to making a mold to make my own hood. It's not as bad as it sounds.

I picked up a hood from the junk yard for 50 bucks and I was going to use that.

There are quite a few how-to's on the net about making molds.

It is doable just make sure you are careful cause if you leave any airbubbles in the fiberglass layers you will ahve weak spots and weak spots means when someone kicks up a rock and it hits your hood the whole thing will crack. So just make sure you take your time and do it right.

My tips

Make your mold, wax your mold, paint resin with hardener into the mold making sure not to leave any dry spots,

For a nice smooth consistant and strong surface use the fiberglass weaved matt for the first layer(looks like white carbon fiber), lay it on, paint resin all throughout the matt

build up with fiberglass chop matt (The stuff you can pull appart with your hands) do at least 4 layers of this stuff, give at least 30 minutes between layers to allow some curing to take place to prevent warping

when you're done, Pull away from the mold, cut off all your excess, sand, polish, paint, clear coat, mount it to your hood support frame (don't know how to do that other than expoxy rivets) Then you're done
